Astros @ Tigers, 8/25/23

I don’t agree with that. They are certainly all wearing the bulk of a long hard season, but it’s more physical than mental. It’s tough, there’s been a lot of injuries, it’s a long season, and there have been a lot of injuries that guys are playing through or being filled in by players in the same situation. They’ve played a lot more games than most players the last several seasons. It catches up, but they still battle.

Since the start of the last home stand, there is no area the team is playing at a consistently high level. They aren’t consistently hitting or pitching well and they made numerous brain farts defensively in the Seattle series and had a few more versus Boston.

The Astros during their six-year run have tended to suck in August, but they always had big leads in the division to fall back on. That cushion isn’t there this time.

The only saving grace right now is the Rangers have struggled the last 10 games and the Blue Jays haven’t passed the Astros, either.

Just wondering…

  • How many “contending” teams have THREE players being mentioned in ROY discussions?
  • What % of pitches have been thrown by players that were not expected to be pitching AT ALL this season, much less carrying the load?

Given these stats, who would have thought at the beginning of the season that this team could break even, much less compete?

Certainly not me.

In the last week, the Astros are 2-6. They’ve scored 32 runs and given up 57. That is not a recipe for a winning pennant drive.

If by “discussions”, you mean like “others receiving votes” in a top 25, then sure. But none of them are finishing top 5.

Carefully chosen word…
The struggle w/ the 2nd stat - attempting to focus on the contributions by rookie or “near rookie???” - not front line - pitchers.

Can you imagine how different the standings would be and the vibe on the team would be if Hinch was the manager?

That game fucking sucked. Even more so because I had to watch Ryan Pressly without the prerequisite bourbon to ease the pain.

At least Harvest (finally) started this morning. I’ve got that going for me. Which is nice.

This fan believes they will show up tomorrow and I expect we will also.
Good night!

BTW the Twins just scored 6 in the 7th and now lead the Rangers 10-1.
Sound familiar?

Hinch might get a few extra wins due to better tactical choices, but all of these other horrible stressors would still exist.

Whatever flaws he has, Dusty isn’t some Terry Collins style hyper redass who screams people into slumps…

My Mariners fan buddy is also convinced his team is going to collapse down the stretch, for whatever that’s worth. Just sharing for perspective—we all think we’re fucked. We’ll see what happens.

(Of course, I think we’re actually fucked)

My bet is on the Angels sprinting past all three to eke out the division and confirm Moreno’s and Minasian’s genius. There, I said it.

A fella that believed in predestination took a particularly nasty fall.
After he struggled to get up, he rubbed all his aching bones, wipped off the blood, and then growled to himself,

“MAN! I’m glad I got that OVER WITH!!!”

I feel that way about this week, so far…

If there is a mental burn out component to the August doldrums for this team, Dusty actually might be the right manager to help the team get through it. Though he makes head scratching lineups and in-game decisions, Dusty seems to be beloved by all his former players and renown for his people skills.

Man, that is the glass half full.

Hard to think up a more embarrassing 2 game stretch than our last 2.

The patient has been slipping away for some time, but I think he may have flat-lined last night.
