I think he’s stupid and insane and has followers but many people see an opportunity and have attached themselves to him, goading him in directions using money as the carrot. Look at his sudden change on cryptocurrency.

I think decades of Russian money laundering coupled with the KGB stroking his ego and his attraction to strongmen explains that. He benefitted monetarily from Russia which in his mind equals loyalty, they told him how great he was, and he’s an insecure little bitch that thinks strongmen are to be worshipped. That simple.

It is impossible for me to imagine that he’s NOT receiving instruction.
He’s not dumb. He’s been street smart and media savvy his entire life. We have proof of that. Is he intellectually capable of political nuance or somehow conceiving of a “long game” with these decisions?
The answer is no.
So if he’s not dumb, and at the same time, he’s incapable of being a mastermind. Then what do we have? We have someone that knows exactly what they are doing and don’t care what any consequences are for their actions. Trump is hedonistic to the core and whatever brings pleasure, wins. We all approach this as if there is a person with empathy in his position. More than any other president, we don’t have that.
It’s all about him. And that’s why Russia was able to compromise him. He doesn’t even know it.

I’m going to strongly disagree with your assertion that he’s not dumb. I’m not trying to be snarky, but always fresh in my mind is his “trying to please the expert” speech to Dr. Birx. It’s a real data point. There’s likely hundreds of examples which are arguably as stupid as that.
Also, he’s hardly savvy as a businessman either. A hell of a grifter for sure, but not savvy at all.

Putin controls the money that flows into the giant laundry that is the Trump Organization. His idiot sons have repeatedly said, including under oath, that they get all the money they ever need from Russia. If Trump doesn’t toe the line, his house of cards collapses.
With Trump, you always look for the transaction to see what is driving his behavior.

Look at the scoreboard folks. Trump is “winning” and has been for some time. We can belittle and degrade as it’s an easy thing to do. He’s not “smart” in the sense of a Warren Buffett type rich dude, but I’m personally done throwing all of this away as just some bumbling idiot that keeps getting lucky. He has been a master manipulator for decades and has hoodwinked a sizable portion of the US population.
I don’t really care to parse what’s “smart” and what’s not. But I’m sick of people underestimating this diabolical fuckface. It’s part of how he scoots by.

JD Vance went on Hannity last night, and it went about as well as you would expect. In that it was a firehose of ignorance and lib-bating delivered with the level of smugness only available to an average white dude who has butt-licked his way almost to the top.
My personal favorite is him describing the UK as “some random country who hasn’t won a war in 30 years.” Reagan and Thatcher will be spinning in their graves at that one (hopefully making a loud sloshing noise from all the urine).
