I really haven’t been keeping up very well but what you describe sounds pretty squishy. Collaborating to head off hypothetically worse eventualities doesn’t seem to have worked very well historically against fascist and proto-fascist regimes.
The US accounts for the 27% of the EU’s wine exports. We are the largest single export market for them and something they can’t replace. The stat I read this morning is that if the 200% retaliatory tariffs take effect, Italy, who is the second largest wine producer in the EU, would lose over a $1bn in wine exports alone.
Does Trump look like he’s having any difficulty doing exactly what he wants to the government?
Agreeing to the CR enshrines into law a lot of what Trump has done already, including legitimizing DOGE. That is the problem.
I’m not advocating supporting it. I tend to want a fight even if it’s bound to be a loss.
I was just asking if his concern was legit. You just discarded it without addressing it.
ETA: I should have been more clear about Schumer’s argument. It was that passing it kept all the DOGE cuts as illegal and gave them a chance to fight in court while denying it gave the President legal power to make the same cuts. I’m no governmental scholar. Limey’s response seems to contradict Schumer’s argument.
Cruz won’t return my calls.
I couldn’t tell you about the legality or illegality of continuing to litigate what DOGE is doing during a government shutdown. The acute point I keep coming back to is that maga/GOP control the legislative and executive branches of government. Good luck explaining a shutdown to the American people under those circumstances.
My understanding is that they are using the CR to legalize much of what Musk has been doing. My apologies if that’s wrong.
Also, my apologies for sounding like I was mad at you; I’m not. I’m mad about this whole crisis and it has quite a blast radius at the moment.
Everyone on Earth One is calling on Schumer to reject the spending bill. Pelosi making an official public plea for him to do so has to carry some weight.
Unfortunately, an official public please probably means that he’s not listening to off-the-record, private pleas.
“Listen to the women” is a pretty effective “GTFO of the way Chuck” message
So much has happened in the last five years that I had completely forgotten that there was a 35-day government shutdown in Trump’s first term.
How have I never seen that before?
“Calm down, just calm down” and “now you fucked up” may or may not have worked their way into my everyday vernacular.
Read all he said to DOJ today. Hitler is back.
Well, what did he say?
You can read. Too much to type.
Gotcha. I don’t seek out news much anymore, it just tends to piss me off.
I like getting it filtered though you guys.
You won’t have to “seek out news.” It will be everywhere.
Me too, 100%.
I’m pretty damn good at avoiding it.
This site, a couple of friends I talk to on the phone, and that’s it. Basically zero TV, zero internet news.
