You know, in a way, ballplayer deaths seem to mean more. If a musician dies (like Dylan, McCartney, etc), you’re sad about it but you’ve known they were old guys forever, but baseball players (and any player from any sport one followed as a yoot) are always the players from the era we remember them by. I can’t imagine Mike Schmidt, or Glenn Davis or Billy Hatcher being old enough to die.

I have the same feeling/impression/whatever. I think it’s because ballplayers generally fall out of the public eye after they retire, whereas musicians seem to keep on going and we see them aging. At least that’s my hypothesis.

You can always throw on an album and relive things…highlight reels on youtube don’t hit me like that.

Parker was a fine player. But he was not a Hall of Fame player, IMO.
Parker was for 6ish years.

Parker has the lowest WAR of any RF in the HOF. Still has a better WAR than Baines.

FWIW Reggie Smith and Dwight Evans have greater numbers than Parker and keep getting overlooked by the HOF voters.
Not really. But neither is Luis Gonzalez or Torrrriii Hunter, both of whom are as qualified as Parker. Lance Berkman is head and shoulders more of a HoFer than Parker, yet he was one and done. If the good old boys network wanted to put Parker in, so be it. But the BBWAA got it right. Don’t put the unfortunate timing of his death on them.

Lately I think I’ve been mentally splitting HOFers into two tiers, the BBWAA inductees as the higher tier and the committee inductees as the lesser tier, with the committee inductees not really affecting the standards for induction. E.g. Harold Baines may be a HOFer but as a committee guy I don’t think players on the BBWAA ballot should be judged against him, they should be judged against other BBWAA inductees.
