Vichy-Frenchman Jean-Marie Le Pen, 96.
A pleasant way to kick things off, for a change.
The world would be a better place without his ideas/ideals.
But he wasn’t the first and he won’t be the last.
Yes, unfortunately, he reproduced.
Apples and trees.
Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary)
Only Paul Stookey remains.
Anita Bryant, singer and O.G. homophobe dead aged 84.
Someone you would have to convince me wasn’t already dead.
I had never heard of her. News of her death has cleared up a joke from Airplane! for me.
I’m blanking on which one?
When all the passengers are getting sick, Dr. Rumeck comments that he “hasn’t seen anything like this since that Anita Bryant concert.”
There was a time when being Miss America was relevant, and every American knew who Anita Bryant was. And then she delivered the most culturally significant message of the 70s: “Breakfast without orange juice is like a day without sunshine!” You can’t argue with profundities like that.
I always conflated her name with Anita Baker in that joke and didn’t understand why they took that shot at her.
She also delivered this famous gem:
“If gays are granted rights, next we’ll have to grant rights to prostitutes and people who sleep with St Bernards. And to nail biters.”
Was that what won her the Miss Oklahoma crown?
That’s not even vintage hot.
That’s not even vintage hot.
It was Oklahoma, remember?
