There was a time when being Miss America was relevant, and every American knew who Anita Bryant was. And then she delivered the most culturally significant message of the 70s: “Breakfast without orange juice is like a day without sunshine!” You can’t argue with profundities like that.

I always conflated her name with Anita Baker in that joke and didn’t understand why they took that shot at her.

she was never hot, but she was appealing in a wholesome, Miss Oklahoma sort of way. There was a nice photo of her in the NYTimes obituary.
