Profunditittes?

Iā€™m gonna have to take your word for it, man. Maybe iā€™m tainted by her true inner ugliness.

Former Colorado coach Bill McCartney, 84.

One of my all time favorite Jimmy Buffett songs is ā€œMaƱanaā€ off the Son of a Son of a Sailor album where he sang, ā€œā€¦and I hope Anita Bryant never ever does one of my songs.ā€

Damn straight.

Reading about Anita Bryant, I stumbled into the realization that Phyllis George passed away in 2020.

Was she married to Dandy Don?

Phyllis George? She was married to John Brown, Governor of Kentucky.

Thanks. My memory canā€™t be trusted.

Wasnā€™t she the first network female sports announcer? Was she good at it?

She was a fan but she was no fool.

The NFL Today remains a fond memory of my childhood.

The first female major network announcer was Jane Chastain, who actually did NFL play by play in 1974. George was hired the next year as a studio host. Of course, there were various female local announcers and commentators for specialty events, but none on the national stage like Chastain and George.

Anita Martini, beside having a great name, covered the MLB All-Star game in 1973. She was also the first female reporter to be allowed in a menā€™s locker room, in 1974, after a game with the Astros and one of the LA teams.

If I remember the story correctly, her getting into the Dodgers locker room happened without a lot of fanfare. After the Dodgers won, she lined up to go in with the male reporters. She was initially refused, but spoke to Walter Alston who let her in. I think Jimmy Wynn wrote in his book that the players were surprised when she showed up, but other than that it was a typical player interview. He joked he even gave her the standard clichesā€¦ā€Iā€™m just happy to be hereā€¦hope I can help the ball clubā€¦Lord willing things will work outā€. It wasnā€™t until afterwards that the significance sorta sank in with people.

I hated seeing Wynn on the Dodgers. He had, arguably, his best season in 1974.
