2022 World Cup

What’s the most stoppage time you’ve ever seen?

So what happens if the goalkeeper steps out of the box on his kick? Is that a penalty?

Studies have shown that the ball is in play for about 65 minutes on average out of the 90 minutes (don’t know if this includes time added at the end). If you played a match with a 90-minute game clock that stopped every time the ball was dead, it would take 120 minutes to play.

I think it’s overdue to have a proper game clock, but you’ve got to bribe convince the powers at be in FIFA that it’s a good idea. Overturning 150+ years of history doesn’t happen quickly.

I saw 10 in a WC match this year. can’t remember which one.

ETA: That was for BudGirl.

Do you mean when he’s kicking from his hands and he runs outside the box before letting go of the ball? It’s a direct free kick at the edge of the box because, by definition, the offense has to have occurred outside the penalty area.

Well, not necessarily when the ball was dead, but during the times they calculate the stoppage time. I’m assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that such is based on something, it’s not just pulled out of someone’s ass.

Yes, that’s what I mean. Thanks.

Another question…can they add stoppage time to the stoppage time? Like if someone got hurt, real or not, and the game stopped in stoppage time, do they add more?

Definitely not.

It’s pulled out of someone’s bum.

He tried to draw a foul when he felt contact on his shoulder.

Ref wasn’t buying it.

The referee tracks time on a stopwatch when there is a stoppage longer than a simple free kick to restart or throw in; an injury, for example or, these days, a VAR check. Also, 30 seconds is added for each substitution and (IIRC) 60 seconds for a goal. The ref is also supposed to include time wasting by either team, but it never seems to be the case that this is adequately accounted for.

So I assume Iran will refuse to concede and demand a re-match?

Yep. Just saw that in the USA game, when it went about 2 mins over the 9 mins of added time.

When they add time at the end its a “minimum of x minutes” theoretically the ref can keep the game going indefinitely, but he’d probably be fired if he let it go beyond a reasonable number

Those warmup up shirts for the US are … interesting?

There was a Premier League game, I think it was this year, that had to be stopped for 30+ minutes due to a drone flying over the stadium. They ended up adding like 37 minutes

The USWNT had more than a rooting interest in today’s match.

Round of 16 matches:

9am Saturday: USA vs. The Netherlands
1pm Sunday: England vs. Senegal

Hopefully Pulisic’s elephantitis will have calmed down by then. I think the Dutch are vulnerable.

The players made it sound like he wouldn’t be available.
