I think this conversation makes me worry that I’ve drunk the water in Idaho. (1) I doubt that Boston thinks it’s out of contention, and probably hopes to re-sign JD for themselves. There’s no indication that Boston is in any kind of fire-sale rebuilding mode, or is short on cash for resigning JD. (2) Houston is getting Meyers back this season. It’s in first place. It doesn’t need one piece to move ahead in its division, and if it does, Martinez isn’t that piece. (3) I doubt that Martinez would want to come back to Houston.
And yes, this early in the season there is generally hope amongst the usual contenders. However at some point ( hopefully before the trade deadline) they should realize they are a step below the Yankees, Ray, and Blue Jays in talent and chances.
Boston will always be a team that starts a season expecting to contend but with Martinez, Kike Hernandez, Eovaldi, and both catchers FA and Boegarts likely to opt out they will need to retool.
A RH 35+ HR 100RBI run produer between Alvarez and Tucker would be a huge upgrade for this lineup.
For better or worse, Altuve is stuck at the leadoff spot and Bregman, Yuli, Meyers, McCormick etc. are simply not that guy.
Boston also may hope to make a run at J D. as a free agent a la Arnold’s Chapman.
As for Martinez willing to return to Houston I don’t think that is an issue. Houston admitted their mistake to him and apologized and Luhnow is gone. And baseball is a business.
Boston may want more for him and MLB ready players will likely be preferable to lower lever, high ceiling prospects but I predict they will be willing to trade him.
And I think he would be perfect for the Astros lineup even if it would not be best for the defense.
Let me challenge the concept that the offense we have seen thus far is the offense we will see the rest of the year.
April - Astros hit .214 with a .660 OPS
With a week to go in May, they are hitting .251 with a .785 OPS. That OPS is the 3rd best for the month behind the Brewers and Dodgers. They have hit 31 HR so far this year to lead MLB.
The trade deadline is in early August, there is time to see what the reality of the offense is. A lot can happen (both good and bad) between now and August.
I know this is the 2022 roster thread and it’s early for 2023 but this team could look quite a bit different next year.
There is likely to be the most turnover since the 2016/2017 offseason.
Castro, Gurriel, Brantley, Diaz, and Montero are all free agents.
Verlander and Odorizzi both have options they are not likely to pick up.
Tucker, Alvarez, Dubon, Framber, Javier, Urquidy, Stanek, Maton, and Taylor ( along with Goodrum, Bielak, and James) are all arbitration eligible which will significantly increase payroll and reduce options to sign veterans.
This team will still have plenty of talent to compete but there might be many young and/or new faces.
