I don’t consider any part of Springer’s career to be “old school”. Springer, along with Correa, would be examples of new school thinkin. A guy like Brett Butler, along with Straw, would be what I was consider an old school example. Not sure if he was still around when Dusty managed the Giants or not, but hopefully this clarifies what I meant.
I’m all in favor of giving better hitters more at bats than lesser hitters
Right. If Straw can’t get it done, somebody else has to. Correa seems like as good a choice as any in this lineup—lots of good hitters but nobody with a classic leadoff profile.
I never said Springer at leadoff was “old school” nor do I think it. I said or at least implied Correa at leadoff is not a new idea because of Springer.
I am wondering if you think I am baseball-dumb.
Actually, I think quite the opposite.
And I never said placing a player like Correa at leadoff was a “new idea”.
I was talking to the board.
I think honoring former players is good, but retiring numbers is mostly dumb
So Whitley gets optioned, not 60 day DL, so no service time accrues.
I was wondering about that when I read it. Makes sense to keep his value as micro-optimal as possible.
Thanks for clearing that up. I had the exact same question as Ty in Tampa.
Cishek looked sharp today. Am I right that the Odorizzi signing makes it unlikely they keep him?
That’s what been floated by many of the talking heads. Also means Souza is unlikely to stay around but honestly, he hasn’t produced at the plate so that that’s an easy decision right now.
Read something yesterday, perhaps from Kaplan, I can’t remember, that we might look to trade Diaz or perhaps even Joe Smith to make some room.
I hope they find a way to keep Cishek. We are going to need all the help we can get when it comes to arms. I know Diaz is valuable, but he’s never been able to stay healthy. I like what I’ve seen from Robel Garcia so far, so for me, if it came down to Cishek or Diaz, I’d spend the dollars on Cishek and gamble with Garcia or Torro.
Kaplan clears up some of the roster magic in yesterday’s Athletic ($) piece.
Whitley remains on the 40-man roster, but he will be considered a minor leaguer and be on the minor-league IL while he rehabs this year. And as long as that remains the case, Whitley won’t be a candidate for placement on the 60-day IL.
The Astros could recall Whitley from the minors to the majors and place him on the 60-day IL to create an extra roster spot the next time they add a player to their 40-man, which is full. The team made such a move in September 2017 with a rehabbing Brady Rodgers to alleviate a full 40-man roster in the wake of its Justin Verlander acquisition at the now-defunct Aug. 31 waiver trade deadline. In that case, the season was almost over and Rodgers was merely a depth arm. With Whitley, the move would start his service-time clock, which is why it seems unlikely the Astros will go that route.
He also addressed the Kent Emanuel who is on the restricted list. He has 19 more games suspended and the Astros will have to make a 40 man move after the 18th game. This will likely be a option to the minors.
Just to clarify something here as Kaplan kinda glosses over it in his article:
Once Emanuel comes off the restricted list he now counts against the 40-man roster limit. So whether the Astros add him to the active roster at that point or option him to the minors, a corresponding move will be necessary. So someone else will have to be removed from the 40-man to create a spot for him.
An alternative scenario would be the Astros deciding to DFA Emanuel at that time. But everything points to that not happening. Given the way he’s pitched thus far and the reports on him from ST and the Astros need for starting pitcher depth suggests he’s a keeper and someone else would be leaving (Framber to the 60-man IL would also create the necessary spot).
Framber’s finger must be a real mess.
And yet he somehow managed to finish out the inning.
This is such a weird point to make.
I broke my foot playing in a floorball tournament once. I finished the game limping but only in the amount of pain a sprained ankle usually felt like.
Then I took my shoe off and couldn’t get it back on for a month.
I finished catching a game (about five innings) in high school with a broken collar bone in my throwing shoulder. It hurt like hell, but you figure “just shake it off”, it’s not like I couldn’t stand it (getting hit in the nuts hurts far worse). I doubt Framber realized the extent of the injury until afterwards.
Do we know the full extent yet and what the plan is?
