He needs to pick another number. That’s a load of crap.
I have no problem with him wearing #17. None whatsoever.
Me either, BG. None.
Berkman was beloved, yes. But “number-retiring” beloved…nope.
12 years, .296/.410/.549 326hr and 1090rbi’s is a great accomplishment. Although seeing him in a Cardinals, Rangers and Yankee uniform was a bit difficult to watch.
12 years is also pretty dang loyal too. When he signed the long term deal in 05, he could have just left and likely made more money elsewhere.
5, 7 and 17 would be my only Houston Astros retired numbers.
The Astros should have exactly two retired numbers: 5 and 7 (aside from 42). Every other one is bullshit. If the Astros don’t take number retirement seriously, then neither will I.
Depends on the criteria, HH. I do not think HOF induction should be required.
From the beginning the Astros organization has had a nebulous set of rules for uniform number retirement consideration.
There are many examples of other players wearing a number and then it getting retired.
If the team decides to retire Lance’s #17 they can still do it after Odorizzi wears it.
For example Denny Walling and Buddy Bell both wore #25 after Jose Cruz before it was retired.
Jimmy Winn? didn’t they finally retire his number?
I think there should be more than 2 but less than 9 (10)
It should only be the very best from a good generation that had success and played at least 10 years for the franchise. This leaves you with 5, 7, 24, and 25 as qualifying for this criteria. Berkman barely passes this bar, Oswalt barely does not, Altuve would qualify once he retires. Bregman and Correa are other possibles but both would need to sign another contract to reach 10 years played. But the Astros already fucked that up and just gave out number retirements like candy and you can’t exactly go back on it now
Actually, they did go back on it
Wynn, not Winn.
A fun thing to do would be a separate thread to discuss which numbers us crazy fanatics think should be retired and why.
I agree with HH that it should be 5,7 and 42. I definitely don’t think 34 should be up there. That jersey blows in the wind more than a flag. He’s an Astro win they are good then switches when there are some clouds.
Two completely different visions/approaches for leadoff.
Yep…pretty much old school vs. new school. Wonder if this is also a little Dusty vs. Click/Analytics Department?
Correa leadoff is nothing new. Springer was there for years.
I think it has to do with Myles Straw being relatively unproven as a major league hitter, and the importance of having a quality leadoff man. You want your best hitters getting as many at bats as possible.
At least they aren’t considering Altuve and his free-swinging approach for the role.
