OOPS. I got Cabrera’d

You are late to the party – one of my favorite players growing up was Hank Aguirre – also known as The Yankee Killer.

Everything will come out eventually. Not that many people will really take notice and nobody will apologize. Not that we need there apologies, they can eat a dick

Oh, Man. Frank Lary was a Yankee Killer in Detroit. They fought NYY down to the wire one year but faded at the very end.

Lary is the Yankee Killer I recall.

"Frank Lary’s actual nickname is the “Yankee Killer.” He was a mediocre right hander primarily for the Detroit Tigers who simply showed up every time the Yankees were in town.

Lary finished his career with a 27-10 record against the Yankees from 1955-1961. So basically when the Yankees had a pretty hot-hitting lineup, Lary dominated.

For his entire career, he ended up being 28-13 against the Yankees, which is nothing to sneeze at. He allowed some more runs than other pitchers, with a 3.32 ERA, but he still found a way to beat this dominant squad.

Oh, did we also forget that he was a pretty solid hitting pitcher. He muscled out a game-winning home run against the Yankees in 1961.

At the plate and on the mound, Lary was the Yankees worst nightmare."

I think Lary was better than mediocre.

I agree. He was a good major leaguer.

Lary is a rather unusual last name but at the same time Frank Lary was pitching for the Tigers there was a Yale Lary playing for the Detroit Lions. He was a safety/punter and I believe an Aggie. Come to think of it, Yale isn’t a real common first name either. No relation that I know of. Yale Lary was also a heck of a punter.

This!

OK – It was a long time ago, and even as a kid I used to get those two confused sometimes – I guess I am still doing it. :frowning:

Exactly – and one of the things that led to my constant confusion. 7 & 8 year olds are still getting used to two people having the same first name – having two guys in two different sports from the same town with the same last name was more than I could handle.

I think Aguirre was effective against them too, but that is often-faulty memory, not looked-up stats.

Not that I’ve ever been a coach or manager, but it seems weird that Boone lets his guys continually gripe and moan about how badly they got screwed* FOUR YEARS AGO.

You’d think a manager would want to minimize the excuses for losing, if for no other reason than to get his guys to focus on what they can control.

*obviously I don’t agree that they ever got screwed

I think so … but it is Lary who had the nickname.
