I have a good friend who is in the vintage clothing business and buys bulk shrink-wrapped pallets of used clothing. They cull out the valuable stuff they can re-sell and often come across some very unique items. One such item was a quilt replicating the M.C. Escher Sky and Water (birds and fish) drawing. Thom found a buyer and got something like $3,500.00. Over the years he has found many amazing things in stuff people didn’t want anymore.
Where’s he been anyway?
I asked. He said he was taking a break.
If I remember correctly, his son is getting married in Spain.
From baseball? The Astros? Us?
No way its us.
We’re fantastic.
Where’s Neil been? Last I knew he was headed to North Dakota. I hope some giant bisonfish didn’t do him in, a la Old Man and the Sea of Grass.
Plenty of time for breaks after this weekend. We need him!
The best people.
A bunch of regular princes.
Though I mostly just lurk here, i want to send my regards from North Carolina to all on the board. So happy for all of us with this crazy postseason. And yes the job isn’t finished and failure is always nearby (I say in respect of the BBG’s) My wife and I are wrecks, though because of our fandom. I may sleep all of November when this is done. So proud of this team. I’m reminded of something Jim Bouton said in Ball Four. I think he picked up this pearl of wisdom from Johnny Sain. When a starting pitcher has a great game and will thus be happy for 4 or 5 days, he called it the “Cool of the Evening.”. That’s what it has felt like to me after every one of these wins. Let’s go!
My grandmother made my parents a king size patchwork quilt from scraps in the 70’s. It has a red back. I stole it at some point in time for a picnic blanket when my wife and I were dating. I was poor - our dates were often McDonald’s and scrabble on the Shakespeare festival lawn in Montgomery.
When we had kids that massive quilt became known as Red Covers. It was used for many forts and living room camp outs.
It is currently on the top shelf in my closet. I just went to look at it and noticed how frayed the edges are now. It is probably close to 50 years old. It isn’t going to win prizes or ribbons but it is very dear to me.
Today is going to be endless…
College football, my other sports passion, will make the time go by fast enough for me.
Let’s do this.
In 8 hours.
After being up for a couple of hours I forced myself to go back to sleep around 9. So now at least I have football to help with the anticipation. Tennessee-Georgia should be a fun one at 2:30
Drinking at Harry Reid International Airport waiting for my connecting flight to Houston. Goddamn, I’ve been a jangly set of nerves for the last day and a half.
