Fox has this stat in G1:
Altuve opposite field hits:
2017: 52
2021: 12
I know this tiger won’t change his 2021 stripes. But lord do I hope this is reassessed in the off season.
I like this approach – And bring Urquidy in 2nd to pick up his 4th WS win!
I’d start Uquidy. He threw 14 pitches on a day he’d have thrown more in a bullpen session anyway. He’s otherwise on extra 5-days rest. That’s the most sensible move to me.
I would guess they’re hoping for 2 or 3 from Garcia, the same from Odorizzi, with Taylor/Yimi worked in early as bridges.
Then get to the later stages with your traditional arms in their traditional roles.
And I would guess they’re anticipating Atlanta will have runs on the board.
Hope they packed the bats.
I very much worry how effective Luis will/would be on short rest.
I was thinking the same. I wonder why this possibility seems to have been ruled out from the get go.
Has the decision been made already?
Not yet. .
We all just speculating off of the postgame comment from Dusty.
It sure makes more sense to me to have a rested Garcia for a potential game 7. Urquidy, Odorizzi and Javier can surely get you ~6 innings in game 6.
Stop calling me Shirley.
Whoever is named, I am confident the decision will have been made with due deliberation.
Frankly there is no good choice. Doesn’t mean the Astros can’t win.
It’s not so much a matter of who’s going to pitch a potential Game 7 either. It’s about who’s going to give you the best chance to win Game 6. If you have to throw both Urquidy AND Garcia tomorrow, you do it. You worry about a Game 7 IF you get one. I just think Urquidy gives you the best chance tomorrow night.

I disagree. I think Urquidy is an excellent choice, and to me the obvious one. He’s sort of the swan in a pond of ugly ducklings.
This. Hand-wringing by people not involved in the team’s discussions is not productive.
There was a great quote from Jim Leyland at the end of his career. I’ve tried in vain to find it.
Paraphrased:
‘If I make a decision and it doesn’t work out, what makes you think that another choice was better? These things are usually close, with arguments for and against. If it isn’t close, it’s not really a decision.’
Very true. You have to win game 6 first. But, history is not great for starting pitchers on 3 days rest either. Urquidy is my pick to start the game too. But I’m sure Strom will at least have a voice in who starts the game. I completely trust his judgement. Other than swapping Javier/Stanek’s roles, Baker has done a decent job with his pitching decisions.
There was this famous exchange:
Question about second-guessing riles up Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland - mlive.com
I will assume at some time during the meetings between Baker, Strom, Click, and probably Machete, someone will ask the question “How will Garcia be on short rest?” Whatever they decide for the innings they want from him will work for me. They know as well as we tomorrow is a must win.
Not the same one I was remembering (it was after a playoff game), but definitely the same sentiment.
I miss Jim Leyland.
