Alex Cobb to the Guardians
No clue, just passing on what I’m seeing. The guy that spoke directly after said it was really just down to the Yankees and Astros but that TB may just hold on to him.
Total revisionist unadulterated bullshit. You cannot stand Crane, and everything bad that happens is his fault to you. JV ? What? If you say you (or anyone) opposed the Hader signing when it happened, I will say that is a bald-faced lie. Same thing with the Abreu signing when it happened. I was thrilled with both.
Crane is by far the best owner this team has ever had, and he wants to win more than you. If there were nothing wrong, you would find something to complain about and someone to barrage with expletive.
I have spent time with you off this board, and I like you. I cannot stand your persona here, however, and you would not like the way you come across here either. You have a son who may want to play baseball. What will do/say if he fails badly in a big game?
In my world, one is either a fan or is not, and a fan does not say “GD it, I hate (player X).” That is not the way I looked at my teammates, that is not the way I coached, and that is not the way I feel about the Astros.
Maybe this is no more than a rant of an old man, and maybe I am too old to have a relevant opinion. I do not expect to change your attitude or your invective, but this hate because a guy failed or because Crane did not get your approval for his contracts is the reason I am staying away.
The thing is, that money was never going to another starter, they seemingly had no interest in going back in on Stanek or Maton. It was sign Hader or do nothing. So not having Hader just means more Montero, more whoever the fuck from SL, not another starter. The two have nothing to do with each other.
I am living in an alternate reality where those with the $$ start with the question of how best to spend said dollars and hit on the novel approach of retaining the best bullpen in baseball (with some minor salary bumps) and investing in a top-of-the-order starter.

I agree – I was cheering loudly for Hader and thought Abreu would be an upgrade on Yuli. I was also in the crowd suggesting that we needed more starting pitching. However, my alternative reality above was simply applying hindsight – something we cannot expect an owner or GM to do in advance.
Am I the only one that is scared shitless about what minor leader was included in the trade for Ferguson?

I’ll just say that Neris and Maton are not nearly as good as they were last year, and Stanek is having about the same replacement-level season as in 2023.

I actually like the acquisition – he has been much better in past years, and I expect the Astros can polish some of the rough edges off.
ETA
Can’t be anyone that good (he said, having totally nailed all his guesses last night).
ETA: Kikuchi and Ferguson would make 5 LHP on the Astros roster. When’s the last time that happened?
Cesar Gomez? Please!
Dixon Machado? Probably not.
Jordon Brewer? Tommy Sacco? Colin Barber? Quincy Hamilton? Zach Cole? Jeron Williams?
Or maybe (hopefully not) Pascanal Ferreras, Zach Dezenzo, Jacob Melton, Luis Baez?
Somewhere Dusty is swearing quite loudly.
I’m hoping a guy like Seth Martinez or Whitley might actually hold value with Tampa since they are young, cheap and controllable. Ok, maybe just Martinez.

Kelly Austin. Never heard of him before 2 minutes ago
Edit: $750,000 in international bonus money
Tanner Scott to the Padres
He was a senior sign (UDFA) out of UCLA in last year’s draft, so no int’l signing money. More of a depth piece than anything else.
The signing money is included with him in the deal with the Yankees

I follow MiLB daily and I do recognize him. We will not miss him, though. Organizational depth only. As noted above, the key is the pool money. And given our success in foreign FA signings, that may be significant.
I have no idea how to judge the value of international pool money, tbh. The big deals for top prospects are worked out long in advance and I can’t imagine the Astros traded away any cash that was going to a player like that. But who knows.

The Padres are sending their No. 3, No. 4, No. 6 and No. 29th ranked prospects to the Marlins in the deal.
They have now traded 12 of their top 15 prospects in trades this year for Dylan Cease, Luis Arraez and now Scott and Hoenig.

Yes. And that is almost certainly what the yank-mes will use it for. The Astros have done well with bonuses in the $50K and less range, though.
