I’m not mad at Verlander for leaving and I won’t be mad at him if he accepts a trade to the Rangers. That said, I stand by my original comment that it will indeed be a kick in the nuts if it happens.
I too would hate to see it happen. I just don’t think it’s an indication of ill will towards the Astros.
You can scoff at me all you want. Yes I’m still bitter. Poor guy, if he took ~$30mm/yr to stay with his team instead of $43mm per year when he’s already earned $360mm over his career, he couldn’t buy Kate, who probably makes more money than he does, all the fancy things she wants. Yes, it will be a middle finger to Houston if he shows up on a rival team in my opinion.
I’m not scoffing, just trying to put the issue in proper perspective.
I’m sure you would never take a 40% salary bump to do the same job somewhere else. Never.
I would hate to see JV in a Rangers uniform, it would make me sick. At the same time, he didn’t grow up an Astros fan(even if he did he probably wouldn’t hate the Rangers), he didn’t come up in the Astros system, he wasn’t here the last time Astros-Rangers mattered, why should he care?
Edit: unless he gets to choose Astros or Rangers and chooses the Rangers
Here we go again. Some people (me) would not if I was happy where I was.
Hey, if the Rangers want to saddle themselves with Cohen-level contracts for aging players with declining performance, that seems like a good thing for the Astros.
I believe the Rangers made a run at him last year during his free agency and he said no thanks. I don’t know whether it was all about the money or if loyalty to the Astros played into it. If he goes via trade now, it’s really a Mets decision if the Rangers offer the best return. The only way it would be a slap to Astros is if he exercised the no-trade clause for an Astros deal, but OK’ed a Rangers deal. Just don’t see that happening.
I have not had $360mm in earnings either. That might sway my decision some if I had more money than I knew what to do with and wanted to stay loyal to an organization, especially when they were loyal to me.
100% agree.
Maybe he doesn’t want to spend half the year in Texas?
That would be a 5% pay raise
Why should he be loyal to the Astros and how were the Astros loyal to him? The Astros paid him, sure but so would many other teams. The Astros would absolutely not have paid him if they didn’t think he was worth it. So the team and player came to an agreement and both lived up to that agreement as best they could.
Would I ever leave this company? Look, I’m all about loyalty. In fact, I feel like part of what I’m being paid for here is my loyalty. But if there were somewhere else that valued loyalty more highly, I’m going wherever they value loyalty the most. -Dwight Schrute
Rosenthal says the Dodgers are close to a deal with the White Sox for Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly (lol).
The Dodgers seem to be throwing a bunch of shit at the wall to see what sticks
Kelly would fit that description.
Oh, that got me good.
I thought we might be the team that ended up with Lynn.
Just the thought of Kelly doing a neck-snap on home run after Astro home run during the World Series makes me feel all oogie inside.
