Trade Deadline 2022

Astros sent Enmanuel Valdez and Wilyer Abreu to Boston for Vazquez. Both having extremely productive seasons, neither ranked all that high in the system.

This is fun

Luis Robert is injured and probably unobtainable (Chisox)
Harrison Bader (St Louis) playoff team in contention probably not available
Cedric Mullins (Baltimore) probably their best player now that Mancini is gone (not ideal)
Ramon Laureano (available) but does he fit, and will the A’s ask for too much
Starling Marte (probably not available) Mets a playoff contender
Brian Reynolds (Pittsburgh) - Coach says taken off list (high price)
Springer & Buxton (same expensive, playoff contending teams who won’t trade)
Ian Happ

Would love me some Lourdes Gurriel (and the Jays need pitching; but it would be a high price and require moving Tucker to CF).

Any other ideas fellas?

That is a mini haul for Bosox. Damn. That is not the best news I’ve heard today. Then again, in Click we trust. Seems like two very good hitting prospects. Anyone in Tejas seen Emmanuel hit in the last two months? Seems like a ton.

I think any upgrade in CF might have to come from adding another corner guy and moving Tucker to CF.

I think you are correct Doyce, unless we go get Happ. I believe if the brass is confident in Brantley’s return, we are done except for an arm for the pen.

Vasquez is from Puerto Rico. I’m guessing that Canelo is one of his nicknames.

What is Vasquez’s contract situation?

Free agent this year

Mancini has stage 3 colorectal cancer, which is subdivided into 3a, 3b, and 3c based on bowel wall invasion and regional lymph node metastases, the two factors of which are inversely proportional within the stage. Any distant or regional separate metastasis is absent, which characterizes stage 4. Nodal mets do decrease survival, but there is wide individual variation.

My understanding was that he is in full remission

Well, for what it’s worth, the talking heads on espn and mlb looove both moves by the Astros

That means absence of disease within the observed timeframe. In the short term, it may not mean anything. Colon cancer is primarily a surgical disease in the acute and followup scenarios

What’s a surgical disease?

Colon cancer is not readily amenable to chemo. It is treated initially with surgical resection and recurrent mets are also removed surgically

I guess that Lee and McCormick will be going down to make room for the new guys?

Enmanuel Valdez’s recent rise was exciting, but he’s mostly played 2B with a dash of 3B thrown in there. Those are two tough positions to crack on the Astros major league roster, so it’s good that Click was able to strike while that particular iron was scorching hot rather than letting him languish in the minors.

Wilyer Abreu is an interesting player, but not a guy you hold this deal up for. Hit tool is going to be the make-or-break issue for him. Per Fangraphs, scouts have identified high fastballs as an exploitable hole in his swing and his CF defense is nothing to write home about. Multiple other outfielders ahead of Abreu on the Astros depth chart.

Seems about right for a half-season of a good offensive catcher who can be trusted to give Maldy more frequent rest.
