He really hits the shit out of the ball when he connects and was much, much better with Miami than with Chicago. If the Astros have been after him that long, I have to think they have a plan for improving his swing decisions.
And he may not be that young, but he’s under club control through 2028. Well worth a shot.
I’m glad they passed on his ridiculous $16.7M per for 3 years floater and am fine they passed on $9M as well. I am guessing the Astros expected Neris to regress to his 10 year 3.5x ERA mean, knowing the league was sure to adjust to his changes he made last year.
I would guess they juggle the plate appearances as well as they can for ‘24 with an eye toward Burger taking over 3B in ‘25. If the team stays abnormally healthy in ‘24 he might not see as much time as he “deserves”, but worst case scenario he’s an overqualified bench bat and a massive upgrade over Singleton.
