Just when I think Iām out, he pulls me back in.
I really hope he has matured and will figure it out. He is still only 26 years old and still has great stuff.
Which makes it all the more remarkable that the Astros still hit on Shay Whitcomb. Yet another unheralded prospect whom the Astros are developing into a useful player.
The math checks out.
New post from āmy friendā
Miscellaneous stuff I heard today.
Astros have reached out to the agent for Adam Duvall, Jorge Soler and JD Martinez.
Astros pitching coach wants to open and run a 6 man staff. There is some pushback internally to that.
If they manage to have 6 healthy options, then I have no problem with this. Verlander, Framber, Javier, (hope without expectation)McCullers, Urquidy, France, Brown, Bielak(if multiple injuries?), whoever comes out of the woodwork this year(as has happened most years). Thatās 8(+1 potential unknown) that theoretically could be starters this year. Each one would likely benefit from a 6-man rotation for different reasons, be it age, workload fatigue, or injury concerns.
Hah! When they re-signed Hader I said to myself āHey, letās also clean up our letting Martinez go.ā
I think Adam Duvall would be a pretty good signing if he isnāt too spendy.
He hits RHP very well (124 wRC+ last year) and can play all 3 OF positions ( but mediocre in RF and terrible in CF) and 1B.
He can play 1B 1 day per week to keep Abreu fresh and share DH/LF with Yordan vs RHSP 50% of the time to maximize the teamās run production.
Give Meyers all the starts vs LHSP and 2 starts per week vs RHSP to give him a chance to have a Chas like jump but I have my doubts that will happen.
I still think that the best version of the 2024 team needs an upgrade at the backup 1B spot and to limit Meyers vs RHP but I donāt know if that player is currently in the system.
I realize cost is a factor, but if I could have Duval coming off my bench or Singleton, wellā¦there isnāt much to think about there.
Iām ok with standing pat as it is and having the payroll flexibility to address whatever (Iām wild-ass assuming itāll be a bat) shortcomings come up during the season
At Fan Fest yesterday, McTaggart interviewed McCullers. Heās currently throwing from 80 feet and targeting a July return. So, the Astros realistically have six starting pitching options to choose from to start the season (Verlander, Valdez, Javier, Brown, Urquidy and France) with Garcia and McCullers possibly becoming options midseason.

Chapman to the Pirates (with a silver lining).

A few more free agents off the board today:
Matt Moore to LAA, joining Robert Stephenson
Rhys Hoskins to Milwaukee
James Paxton to LAD
Joey Gallo to WAS (as previously noted)
Brown says we would like a LH hitting OF. Are there rumors about who we are pursuing?
I donāt know if this is reporter speculation, or based on some conversations with Astros insiders, but the names Iāve seen mentioned areā¦.
Adam Duval
Joc Pederson
Travis Jankowski
Eddie Rosario
Max Kepler is also available on the trade market. If you could get Max and he duplicated last yearās production, heād be a good add for probably a low return, as the Twins are reducing payroll. Heās got one year left on his contract at $10M. The problem with Kepler, is that while he is a very good defensive center fielder who could platoon with Meyers, he flat out refuses to play anymore center field. He told the Twins last year that he would only play right, and that isnāt going to work in Houston.

Jankowski fits the lefty-with-speed bill the best. Some other LH options on the FA market are Aaron Hicks, Robbie Grossman, David Peralta, Raimel Tapiaā¦ maybe a trade?
Maybe we should bring Robbie back, since we already set a precedent with Hader. One of those things is not like the other, of course.
