Abreu is the perfect acquisition for this team, even at the price. He fills a not-so-long-term need at more than one position (1B/DH) and as such, adds flexibility. Law is a numbnut.
Adds flexibility at DH spot?
I’m reaching.
He likely will be what many of us hoped Mancini would be. I am so sad that did not work out for Mancini, but I always will remember his defense saved Game 5 more than Chas did. I am excited the Astros have Abreu.
So now Verlander, or not…LH stick (Benintendi, Bellinger, Brantley or Conforto) and maybe Gurriel if the price is right?
I’d almost bet hard-earned cash Gurriel will be back.
I hope you are right.
Would be an anomaly for the Astros to pursue as he strikes out a shit ton (34.1% for his career and 35.8% last year).
Marlins primary catcher back in 2019 but a part-timer since. Was going to be non-tendered last year by FLA but they sold him to the Padres for cash just before the deadline. San Diego did non-tender him this month. Made $2.7MM this year and was projected to make $3.6MM for '23 in arbitration.
Has led the NL in passed balls in 3 of the last 5 seasons (including the past 2 years when he played in only 61 and 65 games respectively). Only tossed out 18% of runners last year.
I’m confused why people think JV won’t get signed. I feel if Crane wants him he’ll get signed. Unless i missed something.
WAG (wild-ass guess) and hope.
JV wants too much money, perhaps even for Crane.
And the fact that there is no draft and international $ compensation attached to him is probably a pretty big deal as well versus other options on the market. I still have hope but each day that goes by, that hope lessens.
Always take notice when Good Guys have interest in a player that most other teams do not. SD is a pitchers park (not sure about Miami) so there’s that. Only looked ‘21 & ‘22 but his OPS (approximately .775) is about .150 pts higher against LH pitching. I also know he played some LF in the past and MMP would help him log some games there in ‘23 if we were to sign him. I’m betting they are looking at him as a DH platoon option that could maybe spell Yordan in LF at home from time to time?
Alfaro… that’s an ambitious reclamation project. Chases too much, whiffs too much, won’t take a walk, and even though he makes extremely hard contact he doesn’t hit it in the air enough to capitalize on that bat power. But if he finds more plate discipline and turns some of that contact into fly balls, he could be the next Evan Gattis.
Yet, Law had this to say just a few months ago about the Donaldson trade to the Yankees. What a pandering blowhard he is:
“The Yankees get Donaldson and the last two years of his contract, for which he’s owed $51.5 million guaranteed, with an option for 2024 that would cost an additional $8 million. Donaldson is 35 and in some decline at the plate, but was still a 3.5 win player in 2021 – it helps when you start your decline phase as an MVP-caliber player – with solid-average defense at third base. He hasn’t lost any bat speed yet, at least not based on his ability to crush fastballs, and once again ranked near the top of all MLB hitters in hard-hit and Barrel rates while also drawing a ton of walks. He steps right in as the Yankees’ third baseman and immediately makes them three wins better.”
Great find Das. Law is a dipshit.
Good news!
That’s fantastic. At the same time let’s pray Abreu works out better than Donaldson with NYY.
I have a feeling that the amount of consideration roughly equals what it will take to sign Verlander in addition to filling any other necessary spots.
