The Void: 2022-23 Offseason

Verlander speaks through Crane: 3 years, $130M is what he is after.

Sorry if this is posted elsewhere.

ETA: article implied negotiations (JV and Crane) are ongoing.

Don’t see that happening in Houston.

I know it is JV, but that is a lot of damn money for someone his age. It’s not my money, but given the pitching depth we have, I don’t think I could go that high. We could address alot of other needs with $43M/season. Three at $105 is what I was thinking and I would be nervous as hell about that.

If he was the only horse I had, I might do it. But given our situation, no. Y’all might better be glad I’m not Crane!

I would open my checkbook and tell JV to write down a number. You can never have enough great pitching, and I expect him to be great for a few more years.

The Mariners just acquired Teoscar Hernandez.

I understand JV wanting this and I understand Crane’s reluctance.

Hopefully there is a middle ground.

But it looks like the team (Crane) is willing to move on at that price.

I wonder how much of a discount, if any, JV is willing to give the team for culture, comfort w players and staff, and Texas taxes?

Good move by them but how much of an upgrade from Haniger is he? 1-2 wins maybe?

I think a rotation of:

Framber, Javier, McCullers, Garcia, Urquidy, and Brown

Is still top 3-5 in AL maybe MLB.

Having JV really takes it up a notch but its still a point of strength.

My preference of JV is mostly for off field things like publicity, milestones, and fandom but there is no doubt he also helps the team win

I think I know what you mean.

But he was the best pitcher in the AL.

JV is a smart guy and understands the tax situation. He might give us that as a discount if it was on par with his other offers. However, I think he probably views this year as a discount. I doubt there will be much of a discount, if any, on a new contract.

Agree that he was and may be again

But to me those other things apoeal to me and my hope is that adds value and helps Crane pay a bit more than he normally would for another pitcher of equal on field value.

The article in no way said Crane was reluctant. It implied exactly the opposite.

Thanks.

Next time I will actually read the article before commenting.

Chandler Rome is putting a different spin on Crane’s thoughts than the Score app article did. I cannot open the Chronicle paywall so I have not read its article which may imply or say Crane’s reluctance. That is a lot of money for a geezer pitcher.

What major league team has a better starting staff?

None that I know of.

Best rotation in baseball in my opionion could be debated

Top 3-5 almost surely can’t be

2 years with a 30-35MM AAV is what Crane has in mind per the Chron.

3/115M, third year is a team option with a $15M buyout, send in the paperwork.

We made it to the World Series without him in ‘21 and he didn’t exactly light it up in the playoffs this year. We kind of won in spite of his playoff performances this year. I agree with MM’s 3/115 number with a team option/buyout option for year 3.
