The Void: 2021-22 Off-season

It may be. Correa

OR

Graveman, Marte, and Galvis, DeJong, or another stopgap shortstop.

Heyman now says it’s done. Dang. Gotta get McHugh or somebody before the good options are off the board.

This just seems like such a bad decision by Click. Or lack of a decision.

I can hardly believe we let him walk.

This one hurts.

There is a school of thought, not that I agree with it, that you never pay “big” money for relievers. Could be that Click follows this school

I do not like this at all

They could be wanting to move Kimbrel it looks like, if that story is true. Still, it sucks to see Graveman go.

Is that really “big money”?

I wonder if Graveman’s sometimes shaky effectiveness and his loss of command at times in the second half soured Click and Baker on resigning him?

I do not like it either.

Maybe he just wanted to be somewhere else, play for a different manager/pitching coach(es)/front office, etc.?

He sounded deliriously happy in Houston the times I heard him interviewed.

I’m sure it came down to the White Sox offering him something the Astros didn’t.

Maybe it’s a long play by TLR to punish him for maliciously plunking Abreu.

My first guess was guaranteed 3rd year

Even if the Sox move Kimbrel they still have Hendriks. Graveman won’t be the closer.

In that case it doesn’t make any sense why he would go to the White Sox and it doesn’t make any sense why Houston couldn’t retain him. It has to come down to that 3rd year guarantee or he simply wasn’t happy in Houston.

It seemed to me like the Astros were never particularly interested in resigning him.

That is sure what it appears, but my question is why?

I heard a talking head the other day say that relievers, unless they are truly elite, are not worth the long term commitment in terms of years or dollars. The position is volatile and the majority seem to have issues being consistent year in and year out. Said many GM’s prefer one to two year deals for relievers or would rather acquire them at the deadline as plenty are usually available. Part of me understands that. I also have the same issue/concern about Graveman that Jim mentioned above regarding his control issues at times.

Perhaps the Astros subscribe to the above or perhaps they are prepping a bigger offer for Iglesias?? One can hope!

I think, based on nothing but what I think, three years was too many for Houston.
