Spielberg had it right in Jurassic Park: CGI is a judicious addition to practical effects, not a replacement.

That certainly used to be true, but I think CGI technology has advanced so much that it’s hard to distinguish the difference. Ships looked pretty damn good in The Expanse, or even Battlestar Galactica from 20 years ago.

It’s shocking how much CGI is used in every aspect of filmmaking these days, not just big monster/action movies. Everything is being touched up with CGI.

So much of it comes down to the animators being given the time and resources to get it right. Something I hear often is that the best and worst CGI you see in a given year might be done by the same team, and the difference is whether the studio rushed them or pinched pennies. The tech and the skill is there to produce amazing effects on par or better than models, the commitment is often lacking. In contrast (these days), if they’re going to the trouble of building models, you can usually bet they’re committed to getting it right—so there’s kind of a selection bias where we see a lot of low-effort CG but not a lot of low-effort model work.

You notice the low-effort / rushed CGI. The good stuff you don’t.

Disney is bringing back Daredevil in 2024.

Apparently Jessica Jones will be in this too, and Disney plans to bring back all of the Defenders over time. So “yay!” Luke Cage and Punisher but “bugger!” Iron Fist.

I just hope they keep the dark tone of the Netflix Daredevil series, along with Murdoch’s preferred technique of pummeling his adversaries until they stop moving.

Punisher is one of the worst characters in comics and I hope they forget him completely.

He was pretty problematic even before certain elements of society made him even moreso.

I enjoyed the Netflix Punisher, but I completely understand how the character is problematic these days.

He doesn’t suck because he was co-opted. He was co-opted because those types were attracted to all the reasons he sucks.

…and he had a “scary cool” aggro logo

Ok finished Andor and holy crap what a great show.

Absolutely loved it.

There’s room in the Star Wars Universe for this kind of stuff too, Disney.

This is very cool.

Thought for the day: maybe the Alliance didn’t poison the settlers on Miranda with G-23 Paxilon Hydrochlorate. Perhaps those poor souls let themselves die - or became cannibalistic rape-monsters - because the Alliance made them do online compliance training.

I just got caught up on The Bad Batch (S1 and the 4 episodes so far of S2).

Its definitely more on the kid friendly end of the spectrum (likely the intended audience) but it held my attention/ kept me entertained.

It’s well animated with excellent sound effects and pretty good voice acting. It’s set at the start of the empire.

The Last of Us is a pretty good premiere episode. I’ve heard things really jump up when you get to Ep 3.

I liked it too. However, post-apocalyptic series often start good but don’t have anywhere to go after two or three seasons

The apocalypse has already happened. How much worse can it get?

Last of Us episode 2: pretty darn good
Last of Us episode 3: holy fucking shit

ETA: I cannot recommend this enough. It wasn’t “what a great genre episode”. It’s in the all time pantheon of great TV episodes of any genre.

Top 5 easily, and in the discussion for best episodes of TV ever.
