The sci-fi TV thread

This was my primary takeaway. I can’t imagine how difficult of a play this is for everyone to perform and there are basically no breaks for anyone.

Two weeks out I still have a lot of the songs pleasantly running through my head, which is my basic test for the quality of the music.

A few years ago I passed on seeing it in London in favor of a production of Night of the Iguana starring Clive Owen. That production was pretty disappointing, made even more so by how much I ultimately enjoyed seeing Come From Away.

I am enjoying Fight Club at the Museum Moonknight. Isaac’s timid, high-pitched accent is spot on. I know that guy. Hearing the correct usage of slang is a hoot for me.

I watched the first three episodes of Halo today. Despite being triggered by hearing the same voice that always started yapping at me during Windows 10 setup, I’m finding it kind of interesting. (I’ve never played any of the Halo games, BTW.)

Also, a de-aged, bald Natasha McElhone is… kind of hot? Serious “Persis Khambatta in Star Trek: The Motion Picture” vibes.

I would be wrong. June 10

Reason enough to rewatch S2.

I have Hulu now, and have been catching up on The Orville. Great show! It’s fun seeing them steal pay homage to plot lines from Trek and various movies. It’s also fun watching essentially classic Trek but with MacFarlane jokes sprinkled throughout.

Goosebumps

I hope they don’t fuck this up.

I wonder if he uses the force to trim his beard, or if he has a stylist?

ST: Picard had a satisfying ending and ST: SNW had a very strong opening, albeit slathered in cheese.

My thoughts on Picard S2:

Summary

Like: the sendoff they gave Q

Dislikes:

  • I’ve often said that Discovery needs more episodes per season. This season of Picard had the opposite problem. Too much connective tissue, not enough meat on the bone.
  • Despite the show being called “Star Trek: Picard”, and the storyline revolving around Picard, he himself seemed like he was just along for the ride for most of it, and not even all that critical to the resolution.
  • A kinder, gentler Borg? Meh.
  • Gutting the cast for season 3. Jurati is Borged, Rios is long dead, Elnor isn’t coming back (confirmed by the actor), and we don’t know yet about Soji/Kore. We already know they’re bringing back the original TNG crew plus Seven and Raffi, and that S3 will be the end of the series. I’m hoping for a Seven/Raffi spinoff on the Stargazer. I’d much rather have that than the rumored Section 31 series, but I’m not holding my breath.

My thoughts on SNW:

Summary

Already in love with it. I have no notes.

Hidden Response to Preserve Spoiler Protection

I guess they had to shed some characters to make room for the TNG regulars. Hopefully this means they won’t have the option to shoehorn in another evil Soong.

As for Seven and Raffi, I am holding out hope for a spinoff on PornHub.

That is the starship with the biggest warp nacelles.

My only gripe is the haircut they have forced on the impossibly handsome Anson Mount.

Yep, y’all weren’t kidding. SNW was perfect.

I was awake early this morning, so I decided to get Ep 2 of SNW out of the way. Another great episode, and it looks like it sets up the season arc, because every show has to have a season arc these days.

I thought the whole point of SNW was that it wouldn’t!

I hadn’t heard that, but it’s possible that it’s a background plot while each episode deals primarily with a strange new world. Maybe I’m just reading too much into things.

If they are angling for something like that, it really wouldn’t be any different than Voyager: primarily episodic in nature, but always making progress toward a season- or series-long goal. I am about halfway through rewatching Voyager right now and I had forgotten how many multi-episode arcs it had.
