The sci-fi TV thread

It was the glory days of Television Without Pity. I distinctly remember Chloe was “Potato Face” and Kim’s boyfriend/Jack’s partner was “Special Agent Charlie Brown”

Most importantly, Edgar is still dead.

That was a tough scene. Did he get the silent clock?

What season had the daughter stalked by the mountain lion?

Think so

My favorite season was when President Palmer told Jobu that he would do it himself.

That explains why he returned to playing Charles Xavier.

Bringing this thread back off topic, I went the TUTS production of Come From Away over the weekend and it was fantastic. That’s a really challenging play for the actors. There’s only 12 of them and they are all on the stage pretty much the entire time, morph into and out of several different characters throughout, and there’s no intermission.

I’m going Friday, looking forward to it

Enjoy, and get your bottle of wine before it starts.

We really enjoyed it when it was in Austin three (?) years ago (could it really be that long?). I think you’ll enjoy it, too.

Saw Come From Away in NYC the same 2018 weekend I saw Hamilton. Great play.

57 days until Obi Wan drops on Disney+. That’s all. It’ll either be really good or it won’t.

Have a couple of eps to go in For All Mankind, and it definitely lived up to the reviews here. Took a little bit for S1 to get going, but S2 was great. Any word on when S3 might premiere?

Alright. Now I’ll give it another shot.

I might have to sign up for Paramount+ and binge all three seasons over a 30 day period when that happens.

I’m guessing fall.

With a week to process my thoughts on it, here’s where I come down:

It’s a powerful experience. There are parts of it that are absolutely great. I’m absolutely glad I saw it.
I’m not convinced it’s a great show.

Sometimes, a show has a concept that sounds bizarre, but ends up inspired. (“The story of the American Revolution, but in hip-hop.” “A barber starts killing his customers and turning them into meat pies.”) Come From Away is absolutely not in this category: once someone had the inspiration of “let’s tell the story of 9/11 through the experience of the planes in Gander”, you had a great idea on your hands.

And it’s absolutely great in being the truest ensemble show I’ve ever seen. There is no way you could argue that any one character or actor is the lead. Having the cast slide in and out of different roles is an inspired choice that really pulls you into how universal this experience was.

Here’s my two main issues:

  1. The “book” - the writing/plotting - telegraphs every single beat. You can see everything coming. Of course the bus drivers will suspend their strike. Of course Kevin and Kevin break up, etc.

  2. It’s a musical with very meh music. The ensemble numbers are generally fine - “Welcome to the Rock” is an energetic start, “Prayer” is a nice moment of reflection. But the flip side of being such a great ensemble is that they insisted on including solos and duets, and the show absolutely grinds to a halt with every one of them. And there’s not one of them that’s memorable, or even a good window into the characters.

I am not a drama critic as you appear to be. I judge plays the same way I buy art: what I like is great to me.
