Good news:
Apple announced season 2 will start this summer. No specific date yet.
I got curious about the number of cast members on SNL after HH mentioned this in the other thread. There are 20 cast members in the current season. By comparison, there were 12 members in the 2009-2010 season. It has kind of been climbing over the past decade plus.
I think a lot of it is down to them (rightly) being criticized for the lack of diversity in the cast a couple of years ago. They have added diversity to the cast since, but without replacing anyone, hence the ballooning head count.
Like Pete Davidson. He’s probably the most unfunny person I’ve ever seen on television. He makes Lou Dobbs look like Robin Williams.
I have never once understood the appeal of Pete Davidson.
He’s as likeable as Ted Cruz and as funny as gonorrhea.
Hey now. Lou is (was) one of the funniest people on TV—he just wasn’t in on the joke.
I don’t mind Davidson… he’s pretty good at self-loathing/self-deprecation and his Staten Island-bashing shtick makes me laugh. The parody of Eminem’s “Stan” from the Christmas episode a few months back was well-executed. All of that said… he’s one of the weaker performers in what I think is a strong overall cast. I’d prefer to see less Beck Bennet and Mikey Day… it’s not that they’re necessarily bad, but more that they just keep hitting the same note over and over.
WRT sci-fi… I binged Dark on Netflix over the past week or so. What a great show!
SNL has a few real talented actors. The writing is lame because they don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. The cast has about 10 too many people and Weekend Update has one too many anchors.
Should we get off your lawn?
Thirty years ago, dammit.
I don’t mind Day so much, but half of the cast are just pointless. They get in on one group sketch every two or three weeks. Kyle Mooney is pointless. Bowen Yang brings exactly squat to the table. Neither have any character acting or comedy skills, they’re just extras in large sketches. And the list goes on. At least Bennet and Day can play characters in a funny way. Kate McKinnon is one of the most talented players they’ve ever had, and she’s being squeezed out. The aforementioned Melissa Villasenor is a boatload of SNL/character/sketch comedy talent, and she’s completely wasted.
Unless they’re genius writers (in which case they could be relegated to being such) they serve no purpose that could not be handled by another cast member.
See also Davidson, Pete.
I actually enjoy the vibe of both hosts embracing their respective racial stereotypes. Some of their best zingers could not be delivered by their opposite number.
To wit: Che’s line that this is the most snow seen in Texas since Michael Irving’s super bowl party. Jost could say it, but it would have a different tone considering his schtick as a racially-ignorant prep boy.
In fact, their annual joke-swapping bit - where each has to read (supposedly sight-unseen) jokes prepared for them by the other - you get to see exactly this dynamic.
Che had the best line this past week with the “Israel has vaccinated half their population…I’m guessing it’s the Jewish half”.
I would love to see more Villaseñor - she’s one my favorites, along with Heidi Gardner and Alex Moffat. Mooney comes off as a lesser Bennett/Day, and I don’t disagree on Yang.
McKinnon is an all-timer. I don’t know if she’s being squeezed out or if she’s just ready to move on to other things. Strong is probably in a similar situation; seems like she just shows up for the sketches that need someone to sing.
The Disney Lando Calrissian Series is being created by Houston natives and HSPVA grad Justin Simian. Pretty big deal for a local kid.
