The sci-fi TV thread

And as Roger Ebert used to say about movies, it’s not what it’s about, but how it’s about it that matters. There’s a world of difference between the two.

The song about going to see the Pope, I sang that at numerous post match drink ups with the rugby club. It’s a good one.

Turns out she’s more angry Rosie O’Donnell

It’s easy to imagine that she thinks that getting fired from her job for comparing Jews in the holocaust to being a Republican in 2021 was exactly like being a Jew in the Holocaust.

Or a Jedi during Order 66.

It’s ridiculous to claim that the Emperor’s order directly incited those clones to massacre Jedi.

Those younglings failed to comply with instructions.

Cruz is upset about that decision.

Cruz is a faux-grievance junkie.

Interesting story about Shelley Duvall. I was mainly reading it as I’ve always been fascinated by The Shining and the rigors she had to go through to play that part. It’s mentioned in the article that the stairway scene took 3 weeks to shoot. And she had to wake up every morning knowing that she had to put herself in that frame of mind (of being terrified and crying, basically) all day long. And the shoots could be up to 16 hours per day. That takes a toll.

Also, I had no idea she is a native Houstonian. And she’s spent the last 27 years or so living not far from Austin.

I’m a huge Altman fan and always loved her work in his films.

Those are the ones I need to watch. I really only know her from The Shining and Popeye. I still have never seen Nashville, for example. Always meant to, but never got around to it.

I saw Nashville when it came out, and watched it earlier this year. There are some good moments, but I didn’t think it held up well.

So is Trek stuff going to be on Paramount+ or CBS All Access? Or both?

My understanding is that CBS All Access is now part of Paramount+

One last thing about Selhurst Park: here is a shot of the Holmesdale terrace on a busy day.

There’s no date on the photo, but I suspect it’s from one of the biggest night’s in Palace history, when the “Team of the 80s!” earned that exclamation point by winning promotion into the top flight of English football in 1979. Nearly 52,000 fans crammed into the stadium that now holds less than half that.

That promise was never fulfilled, because Ron Noades’ mum was a whore, but it was fun while it lasted.

Now that everyone (supposedly) has their power back, here’s a timely reminder that S2 of “For All Mankind” starts up again today on the Apple TV+ service. It’s in the old, one episode a week format, which I find frustrating these days. I enjoyed S1 far better as a binge re-watch than I did watching the original drip feed.

FYI, if you’ve recently bought an iDevice or Mac of any description, you should have free access to the service. My “trial” was extended by 6 months, so I’m still getting it for free. It’s $5/month otherwise, and is an app on your smart TV or STB (you don’t need an actual Apple TV unit to get the service).

The service is still not fully fleshed out - I think COVID drove a bus through Apple’s production schedule - but what they do have is of exceptional quality. “The Morning Show” is an excellent dramedy about the Me Too era.

In non-sci-if TV, S2 of “Manhunt” is available to binge on Netflix. This season follows the story that unfolded following the Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta. It’s not a Richard Jewel biopic, so it’s not a rehash of Eastwood’s movie.

Minor Spoiler

You probably know that Jewel was wrongfully accused. This show follows the battles of the ATF bomb experts with the FBI as bombings continue in Georgia and how the focus on Jewel impeded the hunt for the actual bomber.

If you didn’t watch S1 about the hunt for the Unabomber, then that’s your homework for the weekend. The seasons are completely discreet from each other, so you don’t have to watch them in order.

Warning: both seasons are very compelling, so don’t start them if you have anything planned coming up. Like sleep. Each season is 10 episodes of +/- 50 minutes.
