The New CBA

MLB.tv just sent me an email saying they have paused automatic renewal of this years subscription until there is clarity around the new CBA agreement and that my 2021 subscription will remain active indefinitely until that time. They also said that they would not process the automated annual renewal without positive confirmation once the agreement is in place. This all just came via email.

“Yes, we’re shocked MLBPA didn’t accept our offer, pay no attention to all these contingency plans that rolled out within the hour”

I’ll decide when I’m ready to start paying for baseball again.

What’s the difference between Rob Manfred and the ruble?

Nothing. They’re equally worthless.

Same with me on DirectTV. My wife has bitched at me for ten years about that.

My wife insists on the DirecTV, mainly for the 47 Hallmark channels it provides, but I’m trying to convince her that she can stream those. We also have a landline phone, which I haven’t used in years, and have to write down the number to remember it. It’s like $40/month, right down the johnnyflusher.

I cut the cord a few years ago when I got sick of Dish. I’ve been able to get the Astros the last four seasons by buying mlb.tv and using a VPN to connect. It can get a little squirrely trying to make it all work, and you don’t get the pre- and post-game shows, but you can see the games. They’re also a few seconds behind live (I noticed that during our live zoom chats). There are a few times each season that the game isn’t on mlb.tv so I find a pirated stream. When there’s big news events going on (like a WAR) I subscribe to YoutubeTV month-to-month.

Craig, if you are using a VPN you might try https://ustvgo.tv and save that monthly fee.

Wow, this looks great. Thanks!

I’ve been using it for a couple of months now. I found it when I read a tip in a Nord VPN email. I realized it gave me access to all the premium movie channels and all the sports channels and that there was no need for any other tv provider service. I used HDMI from my 2 spare laptops to my 2 televisions and watch on the bigger screen. The only drawback, besides finagling the setup, is that there are no recording or playback options.

No problem lacking recording or playback, we don’t use those much. I just sent the link to my wife and she said “Holy shit,” so I think it’s a hit. Great tip, thanks!

I have no idea if they’re right, but some players seem convinced that canceling games through April is more profitable for ownership than starting the season on schedule. Shows you how much trust there is in these negotiations. Theory explained in a little more detail:

Deeply skeezy if true. I think my attitude right now is, fuck MLB.

Right there with you, pal.

I’m curious whether the owners are doing anything similar for their employees that they presumably don’t have an axe to grind with, or if they just generally don’t recognize the value of labor.

Just told reporters they’re following suit.

How much will the workers have to pay the owners?

Everything over $7.59/hour is taxed at 20%

I prefer the union stance of 12 teams but if 14 is what it takes to get a deal done quickly then so be it. That number of teams in the playoffs would be roughly comparable to the NFL (if MLB follows through with expansion then both leagues with 14 of 32 or 44% of teams making the postseason). In the NBA under the current play-in tournament, 20 of 30 teams or 67% go to the playoffs.
