I fully expect a conviction; if they didn’t want him gone, there was no need to take up the impeachment in the first place. He’s got 20+ charges pending, and they only need one for removal. Having said that, this is not the dawning of a new era of accountability in Texas politics; it’s simply a reflection of how odious Paxton is.
Fun Fact: While the TX Senate airs all the emetic details of Paxton’s extra-marital affairs, Paxton’s wife will be sitting in attendance, her being a TX Senator.
The conservative justices on the Supreme Court certainly do like a bit of real estate money laundering. Thomas, Gorsuch and now Barrett all have sold properties to entities with “business before the court”.
And don’t forget that the spouses of Thomas and CJ Roberts have received 7-figure contracts from entities with “business before the court”. The right has been selling out the country for decades, Trump just did it in the most oafish and obvious ways which has lead to the unearthing of all the other shit.
As I have repeatedly said, Trump was the chosen one who would bring balance in the same way that Anakin Skywalker was the chosen one to bring balance: by being the most evil thing possible and as such creating a backlash that destroyed the Empire.
Not sure what’s behind your optimism. 6 of the 18 Republicans voted to dismiss; so, presumably Paxton just needs 3 of the remaining 12. He has the West Texas billionaires, Bannon and the Cult Leader behind him. Seems like swaying 3 of the 12 is doable with that power behind him.
My optimism is based upon the fact that this has been allowed to move forward at all. There is no party-political angle here - the next AG will be a screaming MAGAt - so this is nothing like the US House yelling about impeaching Biden and it has no effect on the balance of power in the state.
This impeachment was initiated, brought and sanctioned by the TX GOP. I don’t see why they would do all this only to acquit in the end. They must want Paxton gone so it makes sense that they will make it so.
You assume a “they” when describing the Texas GOP like they’re all on the same page, presumably controlled by some central figure. I assume that they have an internal war going, with no central control in the center, thus their split vote in the House.
The math and partisan makeup here is different than in the House. Until I see a MAGA darling defeated by Republicans, my money is on the MAGA darling.
You assume that the replacement AG won’t be a MAGA darling. This isn’t about party politics or even internal GOP politics; this is about Paxton being a complete and utter c***.
Of course the trial is about Paxton being a POS crook. But the impeachment and subsequent trial/conviction is very much about internal Texas GOP politics.
Who the next AG will be is irrelevant to the discussion on how they might vote, which is all I’ve commented on. I agree with you though that it will be a MAGA, unless a Democrat wins.
ETA: I’m talking about the next election as I don’t even know how he’s replaced, if convicted.
This is the longest sentence to date for an insurrectionist. Why this is important is that the two longest sentences so far - Tarrio and Rhodes - were handed down to group leaders who weren’t at the Capitol on the day. Same principle as Charles Manson getting done for murders that he wasn’t at.
So, when Trump argues that he wasn’t at the Capitol…
…and he will argue that there was no insurrection, as will his vacuous toadies everywhere. The problem for MAGAts, is that it is settled law. The Proud Boys are Trump’s S.A. This proves it.
Enrique Tarrio flashing the white power hand sign is something that I will go to my grave not understanding.
Does he think that, after his Proud Boy buds have rounded up all the non-white people onto trains (or whatever the fuck their Nazi fever-dream is) that they wouldn’t make sure there was a bit of space left for him and his family?
