Texans 2021

What team would be considered the worst overall franchise in NFL history?

At first I thought he was thinking of the 0-16 Lions team, but now I believe it’s the 1976 Bucs team.

I believe the consensus is the 1976(?) Bucs. The 0-16 Lions certainly gave them a run for their money.

At least that Bucs team had Coach McKay to make the interviews entertaining.

Yeah, that ‘76 Bucs team was hand down the worst ever. At least in the modern game. And that was a expansion team who was hamstrung by the league in ways we’ll never see again. This team is not far off offensively. Only the defense raises it.

How do they compare with the 1972 and 1973 Oilers? Both teams went 1-13.

Future Packers GM and NFL HOFer Ron Wolf was the VP for Football Operations for those early Tampa teams…so there’s hope for Easterby and Caserio yet

That ‘76 Bucs team literally started from nothing. They had the rookies they drafted that year and the guys they found working at the local car wash. The league realized their mistake for the next round of expansion, and with the salary cap and free agency, subsequent expansion teams were much more competitive. Hell, five of the Texans’ first six picks in their expansion draft were Pro Bowlers.

“The Yucks” was a pretty fun book

From Aaron Reiss:

The Texans currently have a rushing success rate of 24.5%. If that held for the entire season, it’d be the worst rushing success rate by any team since at least 2000. And this is a run-first team that traded away its best RB.

What is a “rushing success rate”? Getting a certain amount per down and distance or just getting past the LOS? Sadly, the latter might be a possibility.

Success Rate (running backs): A measure of running back consistency based on the percentage of carries where the player gains 40% of needed yards on first down, 60% of needed yards on second down, or 100% of needed yards on third or fourth down. Small adjustment in fourth quarter based on whether team is more than a touchdown behind or running out the clock. A running back above 50% is very consistent; below 40% is very inconsistent.

If below 40% is very inconsistent, 24% is consistently bad.

I’m not sure how you can figure the Texans a “run first” team. I guess they are in the sense that every team wants to be able to rush for 8 yards on first down every time, but 1) the Texans have no running game, and 2) are typically three scores down in the first quarter so they have to throw. Which they can’t do either, meaning no team has to defend the pass, exacerbating 1.

I see the Texans are somehow beating the Titans so this seems as good a time as any to remind everyone that Bud Adams is spending eternity being spit roasted by John Holmes and Milton Berle.

But they are stomping their dicks late like they were crushing grapes.
