I’ve always thought his swing is best when it mirrors his throwing motion: quick and compact.
Agreed. Jeremy’s success at the plate largely depends on if he can do a better job of recognizing off-speed pitches out of the zone, in particular low and away sliders. If his adjusted swing enables him to do that, he should have a good year offensively.
Peña’s problem isn’t his swing, it’s his inability to lay off the slider 4ft off the plate. That’s not a quickness thing, it’s a vision thing. He’s plenty quick enough, he just has to learn the strike zone. McCormick is the one slow as all fuck to the ball. He has to get quicker or he’s gonna keep getting beat like a drum middle in.
Took Biggio 20 years to not learn it.
Didn’t Pena alter his swing prior to last year also?
Yes, he did. I agree with @HudsonHawk. Peña’s primary issue is plate discipline. If he can get better at laying off low-and-away sliders, that’s when an offensive breakout occurs.
Pena is one of the best athletes on the team. He’s certainly strong enough to be a 25 home run guy if he can learn plate discipline this year.
Like the swallows returning to Capestrano…
Bregman, Ensberg and Pena will adjust their swings
Praying? That may be a bit much.
Ensberg though was major adjustments for each game.
I wasn’t being literal but point taken.
Ensberg was still adjusting as the pitch crossed the plate
Roster decisions starting to get made:
- Ben Gamel released (he had a non-guaranteed contract, would have made $1M in the majors)
- Jalen Beeks released
- Miguel Castro not making the OD roster but staying in the organization
- Kaleb Ort and Forrest Whitley to the IL
All per Chandler Rome.
I knew they should have never let him walk in from the bullpen.
Whitley, dammit. He had the roster made. Sorry about Gamel. I liked him.
Why aren’t bullpen carts a thing anymore?
He still would have had to climb out of the cart.
This means that Rodgers is probably the primary 2b. He’s not on the 40 man.
Singleton is the only true lefty contending for a potential bench spot. Hummel is a switch hitter.
Reduces the reasons to possibly keep Dezenzo and/or Smith down. Though they both need everyday OF reps so only 1 is making the team. Smith is not on the 40 man.
By my count, there are only 8 relief pitchers left so all will make the team. 3 are not on the 40 man.
4 spaces need to be cleared. Javier and France to the 60 day is automatic. I wonder if they feel any other pitchers will need 60+ days?
Hummel and Singleton are out of options.
Edit: Gamel was on 40 man, so 3 spots will be needed unless Smith makes it.
I kind of like Hummel for the bench. Switch hitter with some speed and pop.
Or on a shelf
