What separates this case from middle and high school incident settings is immediate resuscitation, including defibrillator administration to get the heart back in regular rhythm. The latter group expires from cardiac arrest.
Nice to see the tremendous outpouring of gratitude and praise for the bills assistant trainer who administered CPR immediately to Hill on Monday.
Two situations have been in my mind during this.
Friends of a friend lost their 10 or 11 year old son during a game of backyard baseball to this injury. If my memory is correct, the kid was pitching and was hit in the chest by a ball hit by his older brother. I have thought and prayed for this family multiple times during this situation. That is a horrible accident.
The other is a what if:
A NCAA women’s basketball player lies on the court for 40 minutes waiting for emergency personnel at a preseason tournament. There were no EMTs on site for a tournament featuring Big 10 and SEC teams. I can’t fathom that level of negligence. The young woman was fine in a few days and is back playing basketball. I am thankful her injury wasn’t life threatening.
NCAA needs to ensure basic emergency medical care is available at all events.
Who sells that kind of insurance?
[/end pedantry]
I need spelling insurance.
HS in Texas must have defibrillators at the fields now. This law is many years old because of an incident at a Westlake HS game.
The differing levels of NCAA support, as seen at the men’s at women’s Final Four, is disgraceful.
AEDs are present in many public places.
Look around and you may start noticing the signs.
Find out if your store, church, synagogue, office building has one and where it is. Look for the signs at the airport, the ballpark, etc.
But above all else learn CPR.
Chest compressions save lives too.
I know the city of San Antonio went all out to make the Women’s Final Four great for the participants. The attendance and revenue generated was a fraction of what they get there when they host a Men’s Final Four.
I think it was 2-3 years ago when they showed that the women’s “workout area” was basically a rack of dumbbells behind a curtain
Chest compressions save lives too.
And remember: they are done to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive”, NOT “I Will Survive”
One of the greatest scenes from that show.
Yeah, I remember that. They made sure they had nice shit in SA, sadly, probably not because it was needed and the right thing to do but at least in part as a response to the bad publicity that woman’s tweet generated.

Hamlin is off the breathing tube and was able to FaceTime with his teammates during one of their team meetings.
I would not want to be playing Buffalo on the day they bring him out to midfield for the coin flip.
