Right now, if the standings stay where they are, all three of the AL first round matchups (and one in the NL) would be between two teams in the same division. It’s pretty possible that all first round matchups are between division teams. Perhaps that was the plan all along.
Christ on a cracker, it might be best to go into a slump and sit this shitshow out. If the WS participant’s pitchers come out of it with their arms still attached, it’ll be a miracle.
They tried 1st half/2nd half winners in 1981, and the result in the NL was that even with an expanded postseason, neither the team with the best record or the team with the second best record made it in. It doesn’t get any worse than that shit-for-brains idea.
The thing is, they like telling fan bases their team has a chance at postseason glory. Even if that team is mediocre. Especially if that team is mediocre. Butts in seats, eyeballs on TVs.
As you said above, it’s all about dollars, not determining the best team over 162 games.
I’m afraid it’s coming and franchises will be able to embrace mediocrity.
And the players need to be aware of the fact that if mediocre teams have a relatively equal shot at winning championships as the elite teams, then teams aren’t going to invest in the players they need in order to become elite. More money going to the owners, less to the players.
