From the pictures I’ve seen it’s almost Pompeiian, everything just incinerated in place. Not exactly a nuée ardente, but it must have had people feeling like it was.
I heard a podcast with the author of the book that is the subject of this review:
It’s on my list to buy. One of the primary topics is the exacerbating effect of climate change on the speed and destruction of forest fires.
I’m not a big fan of “sporty” landings. That whole flying sideways over the runway until the last second is not as much fun as it looks.
It definitely requires some ‘focus’…
While everyone else has been spending the summer in a convection oven, it’s been a cool, sunny 65 to 75 degrees here on the SoCal coast.
That’s about to end as we await Hurricane Hilary. A goddamn hurricane in SoCal??!! It will probably rain like hell for a couple of days.
It never rains in California, but…
I say this with love in my heart, but from everyone in Texas: Fuck off.
We’ve been (mid to upper) 90’s for the last week plus here in Napa as well as most of the North Coast. Parts of the Valley have hit low 100’s and it’s also been unusually humid for much of this week. Temps are going to fall for a few days with some ill timed precipitation (from a grape growing perspective) supposedly arriving early next week.
The early rainfall estimates look fascinating.
For those of you not familiar with California weather, the average rainfall for August is 0.00” and the sliding 31-day rainfall for the month of August in Los Angeles is a constant, remaining about 0.01” throughout for each day of the month and rarely exceeding 0.2 inches for outlier events. For San Diego, the average jumps to a whopping 0.09” for the month.
Editing to add: Fresno is even drier. The average rainfall in August, like LA, is 0.0 inches but the record rainfall for the entire month is 0.4 inches.
To put it more specifically, there have only been four days in the 142 year weather data record with any rain in Fresno in August. Three of those days saw a trace of rain and the fourth set the record for the day at one-tenth of an inch. An inch of rain there on an August day would be a once per 1,000 year event and would be devastating to raisin farmers, who dry their raisin crop on canvas tarps out in the vineyards in late summer.
The flooding should be pretty bad. As a gulf coast denizen, my heart goes out to any who must endure tropical storms.
Yeah, hurricanes and flooding suck. I don’t wish them on anyone, even Dodger fans.
What about dojer stadium?
First Tropical Storm Warning ever for California. I’m looking at a little over 2.5" on Sunday. Right now, winds at my house aren’t forecasted over 20 mph, but I expect that to increase.
My street won’t flood, although my basement might. Hopefully, we will keep power.
I was listening to the radio yesterday and the person said Tropical Storm Hilary is brewing off the coast of Mexico and may turn into a hurricane before it hits and in my mind I was ready for Florida but instead I thought I heard California and I was thoroughly perplexed and confused. I got home and immediately looked and sure enough. Anyway, net result around here is it’s raining and it’s cooled down to about 140 or so so that’s nice.
Your radio “friend” is a bit behind. Hilary is a 145mph major hurricane. Likely to top out at 150mph later tonight. This is a good read.

If you are in Vegas, the axis of heaviest rain in the latest models has shifted slightly west and sharpened a bit. You’ll get a lot of rain and the mountains just west will get a deluge.
Better Off Dead!!! 5 stars!!!
I question what’s going on in the universe:
Dusty’s lineup choice just made it out there.
Shit! Every time I look at the forecast it gets worse. Now, we’re looking to get 3.5" on Sunday. That’s a lot of rain for SoCal. The desert may be worse with some places getting over 200% annual rainfall in one day.
Maybe Death Valley will have a lake or two.
