What’s your favorite river to fish up there? I love the Fraser but what’s a good one in the States?
I forgot to mention that my 80 odd year old Sunday School teaching mom accompanied us on that Seattle trip, and after a while she got into it with the ringleader and they had a fairly invigorating conversation. Mom’s comment later was ‘She raises my blood pressure.’
I like Portland a lot. I tend to like cities that are bigger versus cities that are not bigger, but I’m a huge fan of streetcars, and Portland beats Seattle on that count.
My experience in Portland is that you run into the same people all over town. You’re in a book store (Powell’s, clearly) and you notice a person or a couple or a small group or whatever and later that day or the next day you’re walking down the street in a totally different part of town and you see someone you’d seen in the store. This happened to me maybe two or three times a day. It wasn’t unpleasant, just extremely disconcerting.

I haven’t fished there enough to know. I’ve fished the Mackenzie in Oregon for trout, and the Olympic Peninsula in Washington and the Deschutes for steelhead. The Deschutes is like a big western river stuck in Big Bend, and I’d go back there in a heartbeat. I think I caught three fish in four days. It’s just a miraculous place to be.
