Yes sir, you need to have limits for certain. But it doesn’t help when no one believes a word that we are told. About ten years ago we were told that fish stocks were not in very good shape, but fishing licences would make things alright, so we all went and got fishing licences. A few years later we were told that fish stocks were still not in very good shape and existing bag limits would have to be reduced along with size restrictions as well, and this would make things alright. Since then, bag limits have been continually reduced and minimum sizes increased. When you talk to the people who go out and fish the restricted species (arguably the wrong people to ask), they say there are plenty of fish out there, previous rule changes have worked as intended. Anyway, what are you gonna do? Anyway, dumping shark heads and getting arrested doesn’t sound like a winning strategy.
In the 1980’s I watched a fair bit of rugby union, the Springboks were banished and All Blacks were the undisputed number 1 team, the Wallabies would push them sometimes, but they were just not up to their standard. It seemed like a different game back then, more of a power game, a lot more rucks and mauls than the modern game, I think? When I hadn’t seen a game for a couple of years, I tuned in and lineout lift had been introduced, that added a fantastic element to the game, but I reckon the best thing in rugby is the pushover try, saw the boys do that a couple times in the 80’s. That’s it, I’m going to start watching more rugby.
So my post-beatdown analysis: I do not follow soccer and certainly do not know the intricacies of the game, even less so at the highest level. But I was thoroughly unimpressed by the U.S. goalkeeper last night. On a couple of Belgium’s easy goals, I was wondering “what the hell are you doing?” Am I just ill-informed, or did he really stomp his dick?
His dick-stomping was at legendary levels. This is the first time in who knows how long that the US started a keeper who had no experience at a league higher than MLS. It was a known weakness, and he was even worse than expected.
The US has had very, very good goalie play for as long as I can remember…until now.
Maybe we can convince some African keeper to immigrate.
The goalkeeping situation for the US is fatally bad. Unless someone emerges in the next 4 years, it will be a fatal flaw again in 2030.
It was supposed to be Zack Steffen, he was the big keeper prospect, was at Manchester City and seen as a potential starter there down the road but he never developed. If not him, it should have been Matt Turner, who was the keeper in 22 but he has seriously regressed from where he was seen back then.
No other keeper from this generation has ever been seen as one with high potential. There are a couple of younger keepers that could be something at some point but if they will be ready by 2030 is anybodys guess.
Makes it all the more important to find some quality center backs under 40.
At some point don’t Argentina have to let someone else take a penalty?
