Mateta missed three point-blank chances.
The one chink in Palace’s game this season is that we are wasting too many chances created. Our xG is off the charts, just not turning xGs into actual Gs.

xG = expected goals?
Correct
Not sure how I’ve never seen that stat before
It’s been around for a while but only in the last year or so has it attained a level of legitimacy. I’m sure gambling has something to do with that.
It’s still meaningless, of course, as Palace prove week after week this season.
Ironically, today’s game in particular validated why no expected goal opportunity has a value of 1.0.
16 mins of highlights is representative of what a barn burner this was.
The worst game I’ve seen from Richards in a while. He did play Wednesday for the US and didn’t land back in London until Friday, though.
Olise had another classic peformance today too.
Richards played well for the usa v. Australia. Jet lag is a bitch.
Palace broke Liverpool.
Quite a thing to see half a billion pounds shit the bed.
4 defeats in a row for the first time in 11 years.
For lack of a better description, my F1 team is Williams, an affection born in the turbocharged era when they and their Renault engine (no, honestly) were winning championships. So I really haven’t had a dog in the hunt for decades now.
I dislike Verstappen’s madness whenever things aren’t going his way (if he doesn’t win the championship this year, I think we will be able to look back at when he deliberately punted Russell off the road for the slight of being overtaken as the culprit), so my only wish for this season was “not Max”.
Now, though, he is chasing down both McLaren drivers from a mile back and may well pull off a miracle. I still can’t stand him, but McLaren is such a chickenshit race team that they have created this exact scenario. So now I am not exactly rooting for Max, but if he keeps winning - and McLaren keeps shrinking under the pressure - it’s not going to bother me.
Framber would look good in Liverpool colors…
Denver scores 33 in the 4th quarter edge the Giants 33-32.
Just imagine if they hadn’t had a run of last-minute winners…
Spoiler: they’d be in the relegation zone.
Against Bournemouth, JP Mateta amassed the largest personal xG in Premier League history.
Verstappen’s charge over the last 5 rounds has netted him 64 points vs. championship leader Piastri. There are 5 rounds left (plus 2 sprints), and he is 40 points behind.
The points spread between 1st and 2nd place in GPs is 8 points and in sprints is 1 point. So if Max wins everything from now to the end of the season (obviously a big ask), he will net a minimum of 42 points vs. Piastri and win the title regardless of what anyone else does. So he has regained control of his title challenge.
But the “Max must be perfect” scenario assumes that Piastri finishes 2nd in every race, which is very much not what is happening now. McLaren does not have the balls to sacrifice Norris to protect Piastri, and in the process will lose the title for both of them.
The end of this season is going to be hilarious.
Apple TV+ has just signed a 5-year deal with F1 for the exclusive broadcast rights the sport in the US. Apple has confirmed that all the races, as well as live broadcast of the practice and qualifying sessions, will be included in the existing cost of its subscription service (so not the same as the MLS deal that required an additional subscription).
This is basically replacing F1 TV’s subscription service - to which I am a subscriber - so I’ll save $130/year with this because I have Apple TV+ already, and supplanting ESPN/ABC as the broadcast partner in the US.
Apple is banking on the success of its “F1” movie generating more viewership for the races when it is more widely accessible. The possibilities for broadcast enhancements using its technology platform are pretty wild, up to and including augmented reality. With about 3 billion iDevices out there, we should expect that Apple’s F1 app is going to be something special.
It’ll probably use some AI to spiff it up. Oh, what?
