Everyone should be complaining. FIA once again threads a needle of its own making an emerges with the best possible outcome for Red Bull.
This being the same weekend that Red Bull was busted for the illegal lifting mechanism (see above) about which the FIA has announced it will do [checks notes] fuck all.
McLaren has instigated an official “Right of Review” hearing over the Norris/Verstappen incident in Austin. Apparently, in order to, essentially, re-open the case, McLaren has to present heretofore unseen evidence that impacts the decision.
If McLaren can convince FIA that the evidence is new and impactful (good fucking luck) then they and Red Bull - who has been called in to attend the hearing - get to argue the toss. The hearing is this afternoon (Friday).
In an interview in Mexico City this week, Hamilton was asked about the Austin kerfuffle and he laughed. He pointed out how Max did the same thing to him in Brazil in 2021 and nothing has changed. He stated succinctly that “you shouldn’t be able to overrun a corner and maintain your position.”
F1 update: the FIA rejected McLaren’s petition for a review of the Austin penalty. McLaren argued that Norris was so far ahead on the straight that, entering the corner he was the defending driver, not the attacking driver, which flips the priority at the corner.
The meeting ran for 25 minutes. The FIA took 6-hours to release its decision which was a spokesman, with fingers jammed in his ears, saying “no” while stomping around.
The drivers’ meeting later ran veerrrrry long, presumably because there was a lively discussion about overtaking.
McLaren continues to publicly argue its broader point that Verstappen is gaming the rules and making fools of the stewards.
It’s always been impressive to me how many people on here not just follow, but are incredibly knowledgeable of “other sports” outside of baseball and football (and a little hoops). Soccer, golf, various car races, rugby, cricket, etc…
