Music 2023

So, VH1 had a a series called Storytellers where they’d invite various artists to play some of their favorite/important songs (acoustic) and talk about the songwriting process or just chat in general about music or life. Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson did it in the late 90’s.

It’s. Fucking. Fantastic. Just the two of them with acoustic guitars and talking.

ETA - this being the 90’s, there was of course a cd. I bought mine in a Target in Southern California the summer before my senior of college. One of my best purchases ever.

ETA - went down the rabbit hole and of course Rick Rubin produced. Which makes perfect sense since he’s produced Johnny’s American Recordings’ albums by telling him he just wanted to put Johnny in a studio with a guitar and play the songs that meant the most to him.

Two of my favorite singers. Dean Martin has a wonderful version of, Make the World Go Away, too.

My favorite Dean song, but of course Jo Stafford has the best version.

Jo Stafford and her piano playing husband Paul Weston had another act where they posed as New Jersey lounge singers, Jonathan and Darlene Edwards. She sang offkey and in a high pitched voice, and Weston played songs on the piano in unconventional rhythms. Some pretty funny shit.

Saw Jeff Lynne’s ELO last night at the Moody. For anyone who was listening to music in the 70s, all they did was play one hit after another. They put on a fantastic show. I’m 68 and I felt like that was the average age of the packed house. Anyway, they are in Houston tonight and Dallas Friday night. Go if you can. Highly recommended.

So many hits from which to choose. This one is up there as a quintessential ELO track:

Also, a quintessential 1970s look.
