Are you familiar with Levon’s rambles?

Neil Diamond, no doubt.

Get Up Jake was a favorite to blast in the morning to wake up “helpers”…the young cousins who have made the mistake (their parents did, more likely, just like mine) to stay with the extended family for a month in the summer

It builds character, I was told, when I did it.

I know he used to do sort of loose gigs with his friends at his place in Woodstock. Is that what you mean?

Yeah, mostly.

They’d have a potluck dinner, and anyone who showed up got to sit and chill and eventually…a late night jam session with Levon and others.

Not everything was professionally recorded, and at the end it was a bit sad to see him like…

I’m no Deadhead, but I do love these songs, little country and little blues

He was really a shy, somewhat insecure guy who learned along the way to put this character on. As time went by and he became responsible for more people and to more people I think that got harder and harder to take off and in the end everything gets blended together anyway. That shy quiet guy is still in there but he doesn’t come out much if there are other people around.

Al was the one who was behind the Velvets, MC5 and Lou Reed covers, and I think Highway to Hell. Jav for the T. Rex and Johnny Thunders stuff, and Pipeline, and Jon Dee for the Chilton songs. I think they were all in for the Mott covers. I think I remember that Rey really didn’t like the Velvet Underground and didn’t like covering them either.

Michael Bolton, you say?

Otis Redding wrote and recorded it in the early 60’s iirc

Color me amazed. Did he have the mysterious “take out the TCB” line?

It’s “taking care…(business) TCB” I do believe

It’s “take care, TCB” which was such a popular phrase back then that Elvis had a few giant rings with ‘TCB’ and lightning bolts on them, probably more than a few necklaces and pendants and other assorted garish jewelry.

I’ll never forget my dad driving down the highway between Houston and Bracketville, Michael Bolton’s version of Sitting on the Dock of the Bay comes on, the instant he starts singing, dad says “oh hell no” and punched a button to change the station.
