I think about that show all the time. You gave me the gift of hearing that band, and I gave you the gift of being able to get to the goddamn show after they’d closed the bridge for who knows what reason.

Uncle Tupelo had a nice version of, I Found That Essence Rare by Gang of Four.

There’s a version of Pale Blue Eyes on that same disc that’s worth knowing about. Seeing the Believers when I was a kid was what got me into the Velvets in the first place and needless to say it was all downhill from there.

I’m convinced they don’t need one anymore.

“Fuck it, Courtney Campbell’s closed, y’all.”

That’s how they did it that afternoon.

Yeah, they used to do great versions of 20th Century Boy as well

I think MM alluded to this somewhere about 400 posts above, but I almost don’t think of Dylan covers as covers. It’s like you don’t think of someone playing a Gershwin song as a cover PUR SAY, just a song from the book. That’s why I didn’t refer to the countless Dylan songs the Byrds and the Band recorded. They’re great, of course, but to me they just exist in a separate category.

It certainly doesn’t bother me if other people count things differently, but you know me, go along to get along and that.

I’d say Jimi’s All Along The Watchtower is extraordinary though and deserves to be singled out as one of the best of the bunch.

T Rex, Mott the Hoople, the Velvets… That was probably the worst possible band for an impressionable young idiot like me to have been seeing in 1985 or whenever it was.

I’ll take this opportunity to commend highly the four Tyrannosaurus Rex records along with the first T Rex record. If all you know is Bang a Gong, well, you’re in for a treat. Unless for some reason you don’t like warbling falsetto over acoustic guitar and bongos and fantastical beings and English weirdness and whatnot.

Matter of fact, after Alejandro I think I’ll cue up My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair… But Now They’re Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows.

I was never inclined or versatile enough to do it but I had a couple of friends that played in wedding bands in the 80s. Nothing but covers. They were able to keep an ongoing ever changing repertoire of around “130 songs for every occasion” but mainly weddings. They got paid good too. You name it, they played it.

Anything is better than any version of Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.

Sway’s on now. Man, it’s good.

The Band minus Bob definitely qualifies. The Band minus Bob is also better than the band with Bob, I’d say.

Sorry if I missed MM’s mention earlier. I just listened to that song.

I need to listen to all of Rock of Ages again, and Music From Big Pink

Weird to hear the Sway solo played on a Strat.

Nah, man, I’m all for people tossing out whatever they want. I was just saying that for me, Dylan songs are in a different space altogether.

The Band is one of those rare miracle groups, just a miracle that those X number of people found each other and started making music.

I now also need to watch The Last Waltz again.

I’m a fan of that band.

He played a community radio fest here in St. Pete around the time those tracks were recorded. Virtually nobody knew who he was and he played in a small tent setting and it was fantastic. Sway stood out and I was so stoked to see it on that album when I bought it.

I watch that fairly regularly. I have to be in the mood and have the time and so on, but. I read recently that someone called that the ultimate autumn record or something similar. One should not limit one’s watching to that three month period.

I often wonder what my favorite appearance is. There are plenty that deserve mention, but if you can relegate people like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, I think you have to go with the Staples Singers and Van Morrison.

Rock of Ages is one of my favorites. My high school buddies thought I was nuts. “(I Don’t Want To) Hang Up My Rock And Roll Shoes” was one of my anthems. But there are several great ones on there.
