I think the timeline would’ve gotten him in the end, but it’s not a sure thing.
His decision to testify was weapons grade egotistical.
Ego aside, presumably he thought he had to take the stand as, otherwise, he was going to lose. He lost anyway, but his mouth may have earned him a more harsh sentence.

I think people also need to consider that this overlord family in that nook of SC was roundly despised under the surface. People didn’t publicly say it, cause those fuckers were powerful and unafraid to wield that power, but once they got a chance to exert real power over them, they did it quickly.
I liken it to the video of Paul Murdaugh’s “best friend,” whose girlfriend was killed in the boating accident. In the heat of the moment, he’s on police video saying “get that motherfucker away from me” multiple times when Paul tries to talk to him the night of the accident. Months later, he’s quiet and reserved about Paul. He, like most people in that area, knew the power that family would exert over folks.

Georgia’s state congress has passed a bill to create an oversight board that would have the power to remove Fani Willis overreaching district attorneys.
The race is now on for Willis to indict Trump before they can remove her.
