I’m going to miss some time with my daughter, which I hate, but I know I’m lucky overall. I don’t think I’m going to have nearly as much ruined property as a lot of people. The apt. rep. said the fire sprinklers went off in several buildings. I sure hope they all have nearby friends too.
Funding rentals is going to be tough right now. There were 9 units that had water damage due to the sprinkler system and they are going to be looking for places.
SW Austin.
I’m lucky. I have a safe, warm place to stay (and we’ll hopefully have water soon). I have family here in town if anything goes wrong with current arrangements.
I just feel really bad for all my neighbors without anywhere to go.
I read an article earlier about energy people like Jerry Jones profiting from all this and it made me want to throw up. Yay capitalism!
Speaking of capitalism, Generac Holdings Inc is up from $278 per share to $368 in 10 days. Their business is portable generators. They were at $84 a share a less than a year ago. Seem as if everyone wants a portable generator these days.
What a shitbag she is, raising money and volunteering in a city/state devastated by a natural disaster. No wonder the old white people party hates her so much.
I don’t think you’re a member of the old white people party, however.
I have a very hard time caring what her message is past “I’m raising money to help a place that is suffering, despite the fact that a lot of the people from there spend an extraordinary amount of energy spreading lies and saying horrible things about me.” as long as she’s… you know, raising money to help a place that is suffering. Also, a place that is suffering that is 2000 miles from her district.
Thanks for that link. I happened to be watching that, and just before that part, some lady host was allowing Patrick to go on and on about renewables being the problem, without any pushback. I was surprised because at that time, even the Guv had backtracked on that narrative. Then this host came in and Patrick stated that we didn’t have problems in each of those years and I’d had enough and changed the channel. Nice to see some pushback from the media.
Been without water since Wednesday. May get it back today, and then I’ll get to find out if we have any broken pipes (I went ahead and shut off the main valve after pressure dropped to nothing). We started getting hours-long power outages on Monday and turned the house down to 65 degrees, but we would get two or three hours of power at a stretch that allowed the heater to run long enough to generally keep the house between 63 and 65. We got full-time power back Thursday afternoon.
We filled bathtubs on Sunday, figuring it was better to be prepared. Glad we did that, so we’re still able to flush toilets, but we’ve been trying to ration that to 3 or 4 times a day. We’ve got all kinds of food in the pantry, but it’s mostly pasta, dried beans, rice, grains, etc that need water for cooking (and water for cleaning), which in retrospect was a planning mistake. Some friends invited us out to their place to take showers yesterday, which was a real pick-me-up.
We had some tree damage, but not as much as we feared. One large cedar branch (good riddance), and some smallish (8’) oak branches. We have one horizontal branch that overhangs part of the house, and it spent last Friday and Saturday weighed down by ice and scraping on the roof, and then spent the rest of the week glued to the roof by ice. It’s pulled away now (and there’s like 8’ of clearance, which gives you an idea of how much ice there was), but I won’t be surprised to learn that I have to replace the shingles up there.
I think the only way you’ll get an outrageous bill like that is if you specifically signed up for a variable rate plan or one that charges you whatever the wholesale prices are. Most plans have fixed rates.
Glad to hear you’re safe. Hopefully , the damage is minimal. Being without water sucks.
My house in winter is typically between 62-65 anyway. I’d have to turn the heat up to 65. I got a note from the electric company telling me to conserve and turn the heat down to 68. Ummm…it was already set at 60. My wife is pretty much a nuclear fireball.
