Craig Calcaterra reports that according an anonymous person who overheard Pence talking too loudly on his phone at the airport , Pence turned down the offer from the Astros (and one from the Padres) and is going to sign with the Giants.

You sure this wasnā€™t at 31 Flavors?

Maybe the sliding door section of Home Depot

Thank you, Simone.

No problem whatsoever.

Anyone heard any rumors about McHugh? Iā€™d like to see him back on the Astros (mostly for non-baseball reasons). I know he had arm issues at the end of last season, but if heā€™s healed up from that, heā€™s pretty much the only free agent left that I think is worth rolling the dice on.

The near-complete lack of buzz about McHugh makes me wonder if 1) heā€™s not healthy, or 2) heā€™s looking for too much money after missing half a season. Iā€™d like to see him back, but in interviews it sounded to me like both sides said their goodbyes last fall.

I heard an interview with him on the radio about a month ago. He seemed excited about a fresh start at the time and didnā€™t mention any health issues (not that he would). He was definitely looking forward to the coming season. I too am surprised he hasnā€™t caught on with someone.

Not exactly the most encouraging news on George and his contract. Hopefully this negativity around the Astros doesnā€™t interfere in their efforts to sign the core players.

I hope Iā€™m wrong, but I think the furor and atmosphere for these players is going to be so bad, that any free agent will most likely leave after this season. While the stain of this will follow them in the game forever, the players and the ever so fickle fans will find it easier to accept if George and others are hitting dingers for their team.

Again, I hope Iā€™m wrong, but Iā€™d almost bet most would take any way out of Houston they could get right now.

I think Springer loves playing with the Astros. I also think he has always wanted to test the market too. Most players go through a progression from just trying to stick with an MLB team, to being a starter, to wanting to be a star, to wanting to get paid a lot. Throw in a World Series Championship and WS MVP, And Springer really only has one box yet to check. Guys like Altuve or Biggio, or Baggy are rare. When the time comes, I hope we can sign him but he is gonna probably be offered more to play elsewhere.

I appreciate the effort of this post but good lord, manā€¦Spring Training has only just sprung and youā€™re about to have the entire team bail out because twitter is mad. I donā€™t know if imagining worst-case scenarios is helpful to you to get through all the shitstink but speculation like this just adds to the pressure we all have to deal with. You have no idea how any of the players feel beyond what they are willing to tell the public and right now, they all seem to be fine with getting on with things and winning some baseball games.

With the minor league system depleted at the top level and the loss of top draft picks the next few years, I would think keeping Springer and Correa is particularly important ā€“ because signing other teams free agents right now seems like an impossible task.

It is hard to believe how this team has gone from SIā€™s diapered darlings to the scourge of the baseball world. Listening to MLB radio is just a pukefest at the moment.

This is what make me sick.

I sincerely hope Iā€™m wrong about Springer and other free agents leaving at seasons end. I donā€™t want to be right about that. And yes, I know this is only spring training. What I also know is that the Black Sox scandal is century old and every serious baseball fan knows what it is. A century from now, everyone will remember what the 2017 Astros did. It isnā€™t going away in one season and there is a better chance than not that things will get pretty vile at times for the players this year. It is already plain to see that players from 2017 who are now on other teams, are not getting anywhere near the flack as current players on the team. Again, I hope Iā€™m wrong, but I think it would only be human nature to want to get the heck out of dodge if this year is truly miserable for them.

Way to double-down on your idiocy. The Black Sox scandal?? Get a grip on yourself, man.

RTB, take a year off. Your stuff is crazy.

Jeezus, if Manafort has his way what will baseball even look like in 2120?

Fredian slip?
