I re-started my Paramount+ subscription in anticipation of Crystal Palace’s European qualifier on Thursday. They have a deal where you get 2 months for a buck a month, which even I got as a returning subscriber.
Well worth it to binge what they’ve got and then cancel.
I’ve got to say, Tubi is an outstanding service. No, nothing is current but they have their share of fairly recent blockbusters and a massive and wildly diverse portfolio of movies and TV shows that spans multiple eras, genres and quality levels.
Yes, it has commercials. But, unless you pay for the uber-premium versions, so do Disney+, Hulu, Prime and Peacock and many others; and for those you still have to pay for the ads-included versions. Tubi’s commercials aren’t particularly invasive, and they tell you how long the break is going to be so you know if you have time to grab a beer/piss.
I only have Peacock and Paramount+ for the soccer. Otherwise, I think I’d have only YouTube and Tubi to supplement my personal collection.
I watched “Deep Cover” recently. It was silly, mindless comedy. Nick Mohammed plays a great awkward character who grows as the movie goes along. Sound familiar?
He plays the snarky JPL engineer in The Martian. He gets more screen time in the director’s cut but his character doesn’t develop. He does get to show off a very believable (to me) American accent though.
Nothing dramatic, but some extended scenes of him exploring, a bit more techno-babble and a whole segment on Watney completing the mission’s experiments. Some good gags get added back, too.
I started watching a Netflix show called, Adolescence. It’s a British production. It is interesting in that each episode is one long continuous (single camera) 55 minute take. (there are 4 episodes total, I’ve seen the first two). It seems as though the camera is on a drone as it moves in and out of cars and down hallways, into offices and classrooms, back in cars, to the police station, and other locales. It’s all fascinating. Apparently they rehearsed and would record several runs throughs, then choose the best one. it’s a very interesting production. Not to spoil anything but the plot centers around a murder of a school girl and a 13 year old boy who is accused.
I am pleased to see that the Alleyn Old Boy content of Slow Horses doubled this week. In addition to Tom Brooke’s hooded psycho, we got the return of Sam West’s posh, sniveling toady.
Spoiler
Lamb’s tale of Stasi torture is going to turn out absolutely to be true. And, of course, about him.
