I gave up on Billions after the first episode of S3, I think it was. Not really gave up so much as it didn’t draw me in, I had other things I was doing, and I lost track of it. It’s one of a handful of shows I have on the list to get back to at some point. But as with books I don’t always find myself actually getting back to those lists.
Amazon Prime.
We watched the first two episodes last night. I suspect the first is really the heart of the documentary, and that there wouldn’t be anything special going on without the bankruptcy and relegation. I’ve enjoyed it. It’s interesting how the team is put together, and how the manager weirdly bales. What was up with that? Just ego?
Glad you’re enjoying it.
It wasn’t mentioned in the doc. - perhaps to spare Dougie’s blushes - but Bolton quadrupled his salary to move. I don’t decry anyone making such a move normally, but this was an unusual circumstance. The coaches (including Freedman) and players had finished the 2010 season without any guarantee of getting paid for the current season nor any expectation of a contract for the next season. Bailing on your brothers after that was just a little too on the nose.
But, yes, Ep. 1 sets the stage by establishing just how incredibly close the club was to liquidation, while also showing how it was the fans who saved the club - in the streets and in the boardroom. What happens in the 2012/13 season is remarkable in its own right, but the 2010 backstory make it all the more extraordinary.
And you haven’t even got to “PooGate” yet…
We made it to PooGate. God I hate Brighton.
You saw their fans walking out of their home stadium before the end of a playoff game, but did you notice the noisemakers on every seat? Horrible, plastic, wannabe club with horrible, plastic, wannabe fans.
Fun Fact: in the last 35 seasons, Brighton has finished above Crystal Palace in the standings just once. Yep, the 2012/13 season where we met in the playoffs…
The back story:
Yeah, this looks pretty good.
ETA: referring to The Shrink Next Door. The other links populated after I replied.
For those of you who have watched “When Eagles Dare” and are now familiar with the lauded and popular chairman Steve Parish, just because the team has enjoyed a few years of stability doesn’t mean the rollercoaster isn’t still lurking, waiting to strike like a fucking Final Destination movie…
Wait. I thought most of us here were Palace fans. Isn’t this a Palace fan site?
You all now have more reason to watch “When Eagles Dare” (other than us all being Palace fans, that is).
Mild Spoiler Gleaned from the Trailer Only
The new trailer shows them playing at Wembley Stadium and also having an issue with penalties - with one clearly incredibly important penalty falling to Danny Rojas. That most likely means they end up in the playoffs for promotion back to the Premier League (which makes total sense for the purposes of drama), which is how Palace came up in 2013 as documented in “When Eagles Dare”.
Butts on 3.
I’m a Palace fan. Screw those other guys. Especially those cheese dicks from Manchester.
It looks from the trailer that Rojas develops a case of the yips. Do they have the yips in soccer?
Nothing that’s a direct comparison, but a player can certainly lose their eye for goal.
For Crystal Palace, our expensive Belgian international striker went through a protracted period where he couldn’t hit the target regardless of the opportunity. After a season of frustration, late in a game that we were losing by a goal, we were awarded a penalty. Benteke wrestled (literally) the ball from our designated penalty-taker because he wanted the easy chance to get on the scoresheet and get the monkey off his back. He missed it, and his struggles continued for the next two seasons.
🥲
Sure to pique some interest here.
Ron Swanson as Jimmy Dugan. Should be interesting.
I can see it.
