For me, that show was Homeland.
I can’t fathom what binging 24 would have been like
That’s good to know, we’re planning on starting the new season tonight. It was a tense show anyway, we always had to watch something like Stargate:Atlantis or Eureka to recover. Great show.
We both love Sci-Fi, so Stargate is a constant television in our house. Slightly different genre, but so is Supernatural.
Related to the Jimmy Savile doc discussed above, here’s an interesting snippet of an interview with John Lydon about how rumors of Savile’s perversions were suppressed going back to the 1970s.
Trigger Warning: It’s an interview with Piers Morgan
It is amazing how he got away with it for so long while simultaneously hanging out with the who’s who of British society.
Finished it yesterday. A consistently great show that went out reasonably well and avoided a massive dick stomp a la Sopranos or Dexter.
Spoilers
I wasn’t expecting a happy ending and, to be honest, I got to a point where I was half-hoping that the Byrdes wouldn’t wriggle their way out of this one (which, ironically, removed some of the suspense for me because I didn’t care about them any more). In a way, they didn’t get away with anything because, presumably, they’re still caught in between the FBI and the cartel. The punishment for all their sins is that their son now is a killer and they are doomed to continue in this horrific life they’ve made for themselves.
I have a couple of quibbles still, though. Camila killing Ruth seemed unnecessary. There was no real reason for Shaw to out Ruth as Javi’s killer, so this just seemed like a contrived dick punch and also a cop out because they knew they weren’t going to off any of the Byrdes.
Lastly, the car wreck - which they teased at the beginning of the season - served absolutely no purpose. It could’ve been edited out of the show without any issue whatsoever.
I disagree re: the wreck. I can’t remember how to do spoilers so I won’t go into detail, but it’s a pretty solid metaphor IMO.
Ruth was the best character of the whole series with the best and most quotable lines.
“My point here is, that man sitting in that jail cell, ain’t guilty of nothing but being poor and being an asshole. And half of that ain’t even his fault.”
Spoilers
The car wreck, for a moment, gave me the opportunity to think Wendy got what was coming to her.
This show needed a warning label for Gratuitous Drama
Just wrapped up Severance.
Recommended.
The tension in the last episode was worth the relatively slow buildup.
Also, the bother-in-law and his role in everything is at once hilarious and frightening.
Spot on with the BIL.
Seems like every episode they ratchet things forward a notch, but only a notch.
Testament to the premise and performances that they’re able to hold you in.
Definitely benefits from the binge method.
The last season of Better Call Saul is an absolute masterclass in slow building drama so far.
I’m going to be so sad when it’s over.
ETA: Bob Odenkirk is a goddamn national treasure, and Giancarlo Esposito is not far behind.
I am really enjoying Winning Time. Wood Harris, in a recurring role as Spencer Haywood, is such a fine actor. I like seeing my old Johnston Jr High classmate Brett Cullen, another fine actor, as Bill Sharman. I get that Kareem says it’s mostly bullshit and Jerry West hates the way he is portrayed. It’s still fun entertainment.
The casting has been pretty great all around (Dr.J looking like a 45 year old lounge singer notwithstanding). I knew quite literally nothing about Jack McKinney before, what a sad story.
Totally agreed re: Odenkirk. I’ve rewatched most of Mr Show off and on over the past year or so, still hilarious. The first episode of the more recent series, w/ Bob and David, is possibly the best episode of any sketch comedy show ever.
The sequel to Nobody is in the works, as is a new AMC series based on Richard Russo’s novel Straight Man.

It’s hard to believe that the Bob Odenkirk of Mr. Show and cameoes in every comedy under the sun in the 2000’s is now this huge award winning actor, but he’s just absolutely crushed it.
If you haven’t already, listen to the episode of Conan O’Brien’s podcast where he interviewed Odenkirk. They recall a lot of their hijinks while they were both at NBC.

I have, and cannot recommend it enough either!
