General Movie Thread

An old favorite of mine has come back around to Amazon Prime: Martin McDonagh’s superb dark comedy “In Bruges” (2008). We join the story as two Irish hitmen arrive in Bruges to hide out following a job gone wrong; their immediate future in a state of flux as they wait for further instructions from the mob boss who hired them. They are supposed to be laying low, but that’s not a strength for these guys.

The whole cast is absolutely superb in their respective roles, with Brendon Gleeson and Colin Farrell playing the “odd couple” hitmen, Ralph Feines as the mob boss and and ensemble around them who are phenomenal. The insidious genius of this movie is to juxtapose the historical beauty of Bruges against an entire array of characters who are, with the exception of Marie the hotel owner, to a greater or lessor extent, cunts.

I use the word advisedly but appropriately, because it’s used throughout the movie (in the European, generic form, not the specific US form). This is not a family friendly movie. The characters are heavily infused with racism, sexism, homophobia and even heightism. There is sex, drugs, extreme violence, lots of drinking and lots and lots of swearing. Even the random people who interact briefly with our protagonists are mostly awful.

This disconcerting atmosphere is heightened by the haunting, piano-based, score that works perfectly, whether enhancing the beauty of the setting…in Bruges…or heightening the tension and dread within the characters and within us. Don’t be put off by the hamfisted rock soundtrack to the trailer above, that shit is nowhere near the actual film. It looks like they tried to punch this up as some kind of screwball comedy for marketing, which it most definitely is not.

Here’s the opening sequence which gives you a much better sense of what I’m describing:

With all that said, while McDonagh makes us swim through a river of shit (albeit with a large floatie of dark humor), in the end, this is a story about honor, hope, sacrifice and redemption. 10/10.

The book “Hyperion” itself is basically the Canterbury Tales.

And speaking of religious allegory, that’s definitely a strong theme with “In Bruges”. Gleeson’s “Ken” thinks he’s in heaven, Farrell’s “Ray” thinks he’s in hell, while they are both, in fact, in Purgatory, awaiting their respective judgements and fates.

Also, “Tottenham”. :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Sheng Chi was an awesome 2/3 of a movie.

Same as ever with Marvel. The formula is the formula: people don’t want a good ending, they want the characters to shoot energy beams at each other.

Wait! I thought that a happy endings always involved someone shooting something at someone else.

“Spider-Man”, starring Ron Jeremy

This has nothing to do with anything, but has Brendan Gleeson ever not been great in anything?

Nope. He’s even pulled off playing Trump for a TV movie, about which I had severe reservations.

He’s been in some bad movies, but he’s consistently awesome.

Life uhhh finds a way.

We hunted them to extinction once already, and that was before we invented the bazooka. I think we’ll be ok.

Well, Jurassic Park is the Hollywood popcorn version of Chaos Theory. What’ll probably happen is something like creating the wooley mammoth will create some type of weird amino acid or something, and when the mamonths shit it out, it creates a new fungus that infects all plants, and they stop photosynthesis, So instead of getting eaten by a T-Rex while on the toilet or torn to shreads by velociraptors (which in real life were the size of a turkey), we all slowly suffocate.

Yes, Dr. Grant mentioned that while gleefully terrifying a small child.

Never mind about the mass extinction caused by wooly mammoths; there’s no way we survive long enough for them to get us.

Wow!

I may have to rewatch “A Bridge Too Far” ahead of this.

“Black Widow” was not what I expected but thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless. FTR, I was expecting something much darker, akin to “Red Sparrow”, but it was just a classic, rollicking Marvel adventure movie with incredible set-pieces and perfectly decorated with humor they way Marvel does it (and DC doesn’t).

Spoilers

I was slightly miffed that the end credit scene shows Nat’s grave (after her death in Endgame), as this is a minor hiccup if you want to watch the movies in chronological order rather than release order - this one falling sometime after Civil War but before Infinity War. They needed a set-up for the meeting with Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, which cold’ve been done a million other ways. They know people watch the movies this way, so they really should’ve been cognizant of that.

Speaking of which, I wish I knew what was up with the Contessa. She keeps showing up and I know not why. Siccing Yelena on Barton seems like the easiest of misdirections to clear up.

I presume there is going to be an exploration of the Widows diaspora involving Yelena and/or TaskMaster. Hopefully with more Melina and Alexei (once he has worked off his excess energy).

Lastly, I’m not convinced the Dreykov is dead. So this may feed into the above, including a showdown with his now free-of-mind-control daughter.
