I spent most of the season wondering if the names I was reading on the roster thread belonged to Astros.
He made some impressive plays. He’s always been the kind of player who gets by with great tools and you just have to accept that he’s going to boot a grounder or flub a transfer every once in a while. Settling into one position would be good for him.
In addition to fielding percentage, I’m betting his range (he is athletic and has speed) is above average and that his arm is at least average (they tried him at SS first) at second base position.
My semi-informed ASSUMPTION is that they are hoping Paredes can be occassionally passable at 2B and he will be doing drills and workouts over the winter specifically to prepare for that experiment.
It will be similar to Altuve in left but they are getting a head start instead of beginning it in February.
I think they are trying to find ways to get Walker, Altuve, Correa, Paredes, Pena, and Yordan all in the same lineup when Yordan or Altuve need to DH.
Not necessarily looking for Paredes to be a regular starter at 2B.
Who does not?
I don’t think it’s that he can’t play SS (Matthews) but that they think his ML opportunity is at 2b on this team. At least while Pena is under contract.
From what I’m reading they don’t seem to have interest in bringing Dubon back.
Personally, I don’t understand that.
He fits this roster
That said, he has played way too much for his offensive performance AND he has hit his offensive ceiling.
He will get over $7M in his final arb season and thats too much for a guy without a starting position and one who does not have the ability to be even average with the bat.
I hate to say it, but this is the hard truth.
I’d always assumed they acquired Urias to replace Dubon. I like Dubon as much as anyone, but he seems to have reached his peak.
If they let Marwin go, they can let Dubon go.
As has Urias.
Maybe. Probably. They’re the same age, do the same thing, and if one is cheaper and you have a lot of holes to fill, go with the cheaper guy.
I’m not going to be outraged if they keep Dubon and shop Urias, but I don’t see that happening and I think I see a justification.
I think Dubon’s place is extremely safe.
This team has Altuve who is among the worst fielders in MLB committed to 2B and/or LF. If they DH him then Yordan must play LF ( if healthy) and he, is an injury risk and not exactly a gold glove guy himself.
Having a defensive replacement at both positions is crucial.
Dubon plays both positions (as well as many others) at a very high level, saving the team 1 roster spot.
He is a high energy and obviously well liked, player who brings high value to a winning team.
I think, in his final arb season, he is no longer a net positive but I am not convinced the Astros agree with me.
As for Urias, I think he is a non-tender candidate. Based on what the Astros gave up to get him, his post trade deadline performance, and potential arb #3 salary I doubt he can be traded and won’t be kept.
The Astros have 16 arbitration eligible players and several will not be offered arbitration.
James Click interviewed with the Rockies for the GM role
The Rockies have a GM?
All draft, no trade?
Bregman opting out of his monster deal with the Red Sox that already makes him the third highest paid position player behind Ohtani and Soto. Because…he’s obviously the best player in the game, and should be paid as such, right? Another circus offseason for him.
His ego is certainly healthy.
Maybe he’s thinking that he got them to trade Devers, so they’ll have no choice but to pay him more. As referenced in the article, only two teams were seriously in on him last year, the Red Sox and Tigers. The Red Sox are probably feeling like they just dodged a bullet, so who’s left to bid against themselves to pay $50 million for him and his 114 games/18 HR/62 RBIs?
