COVID-19

They did.

Turner was in a tough spot and now he’s going to be vilified for doing the responsible thing.

He took the bait.

He did what had to be done (same with shutting down the rodeo - which saved us a ton of cases/lives only to be later squandered by Abbott). Fuck the other guys playing brinkmanship with other people’s lives.

Read the GOP Chair’s statement at the link to see how they’re going to frame this.

She, like President Trump, is an expert in the art of passing the buck and a disgrace to her job like he is to his.

Turner and Hidalgo won’t get the credit they deserve for their decisions during the pandemic. They both have been fantastic. It’s a shame that the idiot in Austin and his cronies are hellbent on muzzling local officials with their heads and hearts in the right place like them.

America’s handling of COVID-19 is much worse than a nation that foolishly tried to achieve herd immunity right away. If that isn’t damning, I don’t know what is.

Health official: Trump rally ‘likely’ source of virus surge

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Tulsa that drew thousands of people in late June, along with large protests that accompanied it, “likely contributed” to a dramatic surge in new coronavirus cases, Tulsa City-County Health Department Director Dr. Bruce Dart said Wednesday.

Tulsa County reported 261 confirmed new cases on Monday, a one-day record high, and another 206 cases on Tuesday.

Although the health department’s policy is to not publicly identify individual settings where people may have contracted the virus, Dart said those large gatherings “more than likely” contributed to the spike.

“In the past few days, we’ve seen almost 500 new cases, and we had several large events just over two weeks ago, so I guess we just connect the dots,” Dart said.

A spokesman for the Trump campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

It’s almost like there was some unifying characteristic that would explain both voting for Abbott, Patrick and Paxson and not understanding the science behind Covid.

Today has been awful. Many states, including Texas, have logged new highs in cases AND fatalities. We’ve gone over the 60,000 daily mark and are poised to get over 1,000 daily dead by next week. After that, fatalities will accelerate as secondary infections of more vulnerable people mature.

It is difficult to express how fucked we truly are. Only a coherent national plan can prevent deaths in the millions. None will be forthcoming from Trump. He and his sycophantic cultist followers are literally killing us; soon, it will be by the thousands per day.

That’s why I’m so fond of this website. For just a little bit I can forget the cares of the world and think about beer and queso.

Watching our Mayor cancel the state Republican convention today gave me hope. He’s a good man, but he’ll pay, and that’s why we’re fucked.

Sir, this is a Wendy’s.

I hope I’m full of shit. But, I don’t think I am.

It’s taking 7-9 days to get test results back. There is so much virus that is not hitting the stats, or is backed up waiting to be tested, that the next couple of weeks are going to be brutal.

We are already hitting New York-levels of deaths at home.

This is truly scary, and there’s no end in sight. Instead of tightening up, we’re being told to send our kids to school. They are projecting over 200,000 deaths by the end of October, but that’s assuming that we run at a lower per-day death rate than we are now, while things are accelerating.

We are bad in Harris County - now being touted as the next New York - and Texas in general is terrible. Arizona - specifically Phoenix - is in similar shape. Florida is a disaster. No one in America is safe while states with Trumpian government continue to provide the virus with a perfect breeding environment.

This is real and from this morning. How the fuck is anything supposed to happen when people are listening to this fucking retard.

Those governments aren’t helping, but the real reason we’re fucked is because those states have significant populations that want exactly the behaviors that those governments are exhibiting. As a nation, we have ~30% of the population that are science-denying, reality-rejecting, willfully-ignorant, racist idiots. When you’re dealing with problems with reasonably tight feedback mechanisms, you can usually keep those idiots in check. When you’re dealing with more subtle problems with longer feedback loops, like a virus that an individual can spread for days before knowing that they’re infected, or a changing climate that takes decades or centuries to change direction, you’re F-U-C-K-E-D if those people gain any sort of political clout.

There are, of course, a number of people as you describe. However, many are simply confused because of the mixed messages. When you have the president, supported by a widely-watched cable news channel - all broadcast from the hosts’ individual, hermetically sealed, basement studios - that spends every day saying that the experts are wrong, the virus is a hoax, masks are a communist affront to your freedom and your kids must man-up and go to school, it’s understandable how many people don’t know what’s right and go with what’s easier.

The racism is all theirs, though, of course.

His continued repetition of this insanity Is a microcosm of his presidency. At first, you think “this is just theatre for his base, he’s really not that stupid. Maybe he’ll pivot one day.” The second time, you speculate that he’s just too stupid to think of another play, but he’s really not THAT stupid. But, alas, he really is THAT stupid. In his pea brain, all his shit is genius.
