Absolutely, and not only canceling SXSW but canceling it when they did.
As of last night Travis/Williamson/Hays is almost two full weeks in and had 152 combined cases and no deaths. While I’m sure our number of cases is underreported, NYC was having people die by this point.
Checking the numbers for today (although, as Curly says, “day ain’t over yet”) some trends - some good, some bad - seem to be continuing:
New York’s curve continues to flatten, but the numbers are still unfathomable
New Jersey spiked hard today - maybe the result of testing, but still…
WA reporting no new cases or deaths!
Cases in Texas jumped a bit today over yesterday, but still faring better than many, many less populous states (thank you mayors!), again…maybe due to testing
Louisiana continues to be bad (see comments above re Mardi Gras)
Mississippi is one to watch - its trending the wrong way and their Governor just rendered local shelter-in-place orders illegal
The whole redneck riviera is trending pretty badly - much of it down to dumbfuck Governors
The rust belt is starting to trend up, particularly PA and MI
I have actually been proud of our governor in Alabama. She closed schools, sent government workers home, closed our beaches and closed eat in restaurants. Ordered no meetings of greater than 25 people two weeks ago. That now has gotten her sued by chief wacko and predator Roy Moore for violating 1st amendment religious rights.
Donald Trump is evil. He turned down Cuomo’s rquest for ventilators and basically called him a liar about NY’s need. Everything is getting even with enemies for Trump, and he does not care who he hurts. This time he is ignoring helpless sick people in NY ICUs for a political “gotcha” on Cuomo. He should be stopped, but apparently no one has the guts to oppose his venom.
The US House has been working around in-person voting in the chamber by using unanimous consent. This has allowed the House Reps to return home to reduce the threat of transmission.
Thomas Massey (R-KY), however, is threatening to force a roll-call vote on the virus spending bill. This has forced House Reps to return from their homes to DC to make sure the vote isn’t further delayed by Massey’s ridiculous and always-doomed-to-failure stunt.
This puts the House Reps, their families, coworkers and random fellow travelers all at a greater risk of infection. Is every elected official from Kentucky a raging fucking asshole?
I’ve always known that Trump supporters are ignorant pigfuckers guided by what usually turns out to be a series of personal pathologies. I knew that due to perceived grievance and actual venality they reliably voted directly against their economic interests. But I never knew they were suicidal. I guess that’s the ultimate stress test of a cult.
